This year is the Jade Anniversary for a college that came into being by a l927 Mississippi Legisla- tive Act to prepare a better educated Youth. We now see the name of NWJC being brought to state-wide attention through its educational progress, its expansion of physical plant, its inter-collegiate sports activities, and its questing student body. The combination of expended energy and ef- fort toward advancement creates the goal by which we the staff of the 1963 RCCKETEER, wish to portray -the spirit of NORTHWEST. 4 Contents Declication Administration Classes Crganizations Features Special Events Activities Athletics The Year Theke eomeb a time in Ike life O5 evenv individual when Li beeomec neeessenv ion new io seven his neia iionshipb with peopKe on onganizaILon5 of which he hah been a vitae pant. Gully, Librarian of Northwest Mississippi Junior College, we, the ROCKETEER Staff, respectfully dedicate this 1963 volume of the ROCKETEER. We are particularly indebted to Mrs. Gully for her helpfulness, her support, and her friendship. She has won the respect and admiration of the students and members of the administration by the application of individual interest in all students. She guides rather than drives them to the source of serious thought and study. It is with sincere appreciation that we dedicate the 1963 ROCKETEER to Mrs. Gully. Search for Tomorrow was the theme. Reverend Glyn O. Wiygul, Methodist pastor from Amory, Mississippi, was our speaker. Following the nightly services in the college auditorium, dormitory discussions were held. The purpose of Religious Emphasis Week is to encourage campus students to utilize their religion and their belief in Christianity. Through these services, the religious organizations at Northwest are brought into closer contact, and together they promote Christian Fellowship on the campus. O N N O R T H W E S T C A M P U S Bell Book and Candle BELL, BOOK AND CANDLE, the fall theatrical production, was expressly designed for entertainment. It was warm, witty, fantastic comedy. Of course, the audience knew that witches didn't exist-at least not any more. Still, we would bet that many still had, deep in their hearts, the age-old belief in the super-natural. lt is at this deep-seated belief that fun was poked, with the message in the end that being human is better than being a witch any day. So, for the time being, the audience threw away their skepticism about things supernatural and let the theatre take them for a time into a world of witches and warlocks, familiars and fun. LJ Bells are Ringing BELLS ARE RINGING tells of a telephone operator for an answering service who in her cozy way manages to get entangled with the personal problems of her clients. Young and beautiful Ella Peterson is employed by the Susanswers- phone Company when she begins to fall in love with a client, Jeff Moss, a party loving playwright. She encourages him to overcome his difficulties and writes with him a successful play, The Midas Touch. Another subscriber to the service is Dr. Kitchell, a wide eyed dentist who is better suited to write songs than fix teeth. Ella starts him following his avocation. Still a third is Blake Barton, an aspiring young actor, whom she leads to give up his motorcycle and blue ieans for a more conventional approach to his trade. Ella conceals her true identity but eventually all three recognize her as the telephone operator, and a person with rare natural warmth, honesty, and charm.
