Remember when we . . .? Laughter! Yeah! I do . . . we sure did some crazy things when we were frosh . . . how about our sophomore year . . . well, what about our junior year . . . but then there ' s this year, our big senior year! Now what? The Senior year is one of realization. Knowing there is no next year, no new buddies, no new teachers to harass. The high school days are a limited quantity. As each day passes, the seniors realize this will be their last Homecoming . . . last basketball game . . . last yearbook . . .last track meet. LAST DAY OF SCHOOL! Some may wait for that day with utter joy, and others will wait in ominous sadness. Freedom is a big word for the graduate. Knowing he alone will make all of his decisions. No more Career Education to help plan . . . no teachers to guide . . . no more principals to punish! Just the Graduate alone against the world! After going to two training camps that dream seems all the closer. Robin started in trapshooting when he was ten. His grandfather is a trapshooter so Robin got his interest from him. Robin entered his first competition when he was fifteen. He placed first at that meet in the junior division. Since then he has received many more awards and trophies. One of the many honors was the right to attend an Olympic training camp. To receive an invitation Robin had to place in the top 15 at the regional meet at the Central Nebraska Gun Club in Doniphan. Not only did he place but he won, shooting 97 of 100 targets. Robin spent two weeks in Colorado Springs, Colorado in the U.S. Olympic training center. He was one of more than 200 shooters from around the United States who participated at the national meet. Walter Zobel, from Minnesota, coached Robin while he was there. All the hard work became worth it when Robin placed second in the final competition. Who knows maybe you ' ll see Robin at the Olympics in 1984. For one Northwest Senior it ain ' t be too soon. Long hours of practice since child- hood has finally paid off for Renee Werner. Renee now practices five days out of seven for two and a half hours. Her favorite skating competition is figure eights. And that is how Renee qualified for Regionals where she received first. In Nationals she placed 16 out of 500 Midwestern skaters. Renee ' s future plan at this moment is to become a skating teacher as soon as her career as an amatuer skater is through. Renee hopes there will soon be a roller skating division in the Olympics in the near future. But until then she will just have to place first in smaller competitive events. They are sure to correct any sophomore or freshman if they happen to step out of line. But even more important, the juniors are impatiently waiting for next year when they will finally be the seniors of the school. g In the meantime the juniors take on other responsibilities such as planning the Prom. Members of the band selection committee for the 1980-81 Prom are Sherry Arnold, Kim Mott, Kevin Muhs, Brad Cook, Michelle Lamb, Sheri Cure, and Tracey Trynchy. Juniors also participate in student government by holding class offices and being a member of Student Council. Class officers are President-Kim Mott, Vice President-Rob Falldorf Secretary-Lori Heins, and Treasurer-Ken Brand. Student Council representatives for the class of 1982 are Rob Falldorf, Lori Heins, Sharon Eriksen. and Theresa Oakeson. Never a slow moment for someone growing up in California! In the eyes of Robb Bjorklund life in Ventura, California was fast and exhilarating. Robb had mixed emotions about coming to Grand Island, Nebras- ka. He wasn ' t sure how the students would take to his extremely blonde hair or California clothes. It took awhile to adjust but Robb didn ' t have any trouble making friends. Robb likes to get involved in sports, he enjoys the feeling of being an all around person. He plans to make a life for himself in California after gradua- tion. Exci- tement, with screams of joy, was definitely released when Northwest stomped over Superior 24-6. Climaxing the victory was the dance sponsored by Spirit Club. Red. white, and pink streamers helped to carry out the theme Magic . The tradition of crowning at the dance was broken this year, as King Brent Karley and Queen Joni Quandt. were crowned at half time. The Northwest Vikings marched third this year, under the direction of Mr. Charles hick, and under the student supervision of Majorette Nancy Mader. The Vikettes and Cheerleaders performed to the tune of Men of Ohio as they marched through downtown Grand Island. Out of all the senior girls this year, Sherri Christensen, was chosen by the student body, to be the Viking ' s hostess. The work of being a hostess is hard and time consuming, but it pays off with many rewarding memories. Talent and attitude helped this years team gather two first place wins while achieving many other well earned placings. Defeat- ing the Crusaders in the final game of the District tournament reserved a place for the Vikes at State. They ended their year with a very good 16-7 record. Making the Conference teams were Les Daberkow, Joni Quandt, and Jackie Rauert. The J. V. ' s put forth their best effort with a winning 6-4 record. The girls were in a lot of close games and showed a lot of spirit throughout the season. The freshmen girls volleyball team ended their season with a 3-7 record. For the girls it was a learning process which should be very rewarding in the years to come. FIRST ROW LR: Amy Leaman, Stacy Krohn, Slacie Spiehs. Marcy Wail. A Promising Future Future Viking teams should have no trouble continuing with this year ' s success as the J.V. ' s went 13-1 losing only to Minden 28-29. The good habits the J.V. ' s developed and their great shooting percentage from the field should help them to improve in the future. Although the freshmen ' s 4-8 record wasn ' t a winning one they did improve in their ability to work together and in the fundamentals of basketball. Sets of lines and running were worth the victories. ■ Sue Quandt Scores Centura 62-29 Seward 36-32 Minden 54-31 Crete 38-30 St. Cecilia 60-43 Aurora 45-20 St. Paul 61-25 Central City 44-24 Adams Central 58-28 Holdrege 55-22 Schuyler 61-26 Central Catholic 50-29 Holiday Tour. Il was a very rewarding experience playing on ihe team. - Joni Quandt Super! 99 It was the best teamwork ever. Before it was just one or two. - Jackie Rauert Super was the word Coach Schultz used to describe this year ' s Varsity team. The Lady Vikings success was due to three and four years of hard work by the players stated Coach Schultz. The road to success started when the Vikes won their own Holiday Tournament and the Central Ten Conference championships. A victory over Central Catholic in the finals of Districts earned the Vikings their first berth ever in the State Tournament. They beat Ord in first round action and advanced to the semi-finals where they lost to Crete giving them a 24-1 record the best ever for any team at Northwest. For most of the season the Vikes were rated number one in Class B by the Omaha World Herald and the Lincoln Journal-Star. They were rated sixth overall in the AP poll. Jackie Rauert, Leslie Daberkow. and Joni Quandt were named to the All- West Division and All Central Ten Conference first teams. Coach Schultz was honored with the KRGI Sportscasters Coach of the Year Award. It was a dream that we worked for for four years and it finally came true. - Colleen Muhs State was great, it was different, it was a new experience. - Donetta Shultz We couldn ' t ask for a better season. - Colleen Muhs 93 Quality, Not Quantity With only lour seniors this year ' s Girl ' s Truck Team didn ' t have much experience  hen the season started. Early in the season they proved that it didn ' t make a lot of difference as they took second in the G.I. Relays. They continued to improve as they took first in five of their ten meets and placed second in the other five. Jackie Rauert. Leslie Daberko , Chris Becker. Sue Quandt, Tracy Dcnn- hardt, Tammy Dennhardt, and Deb Kiel qualified for the State meet. Chris Becker placed fifth in the long jump and the 3200 m relay took third. FRONT ROW: L-R: Mary Kennedy. A colophone is the part of the book set aside to tell hoiv the yearbook came about and the people who made it possible. Well, here ' s how this yearbook came about. While racking our brains trying to figure out what to use as a theme for the book. Lori Clark and I thought that to use Hagar the Horrible on the cover would be only fitting for Northwest. After a few calls to Al Schmahl at the Grand Island Independent we sat down and wrote a letter to Mr. Dik Browne, the creator of Hagar. We waited and waited for what seemed like an eternity for a reply but there was none. So we talked to Mr. Schmahl again and he gave us a different address to try. This time it worked. We got a reply. Mr. Browne wrote us a letter saying he was flattered that we had chosen to use Hagar for our yearbook and that Hagar is delighted since this will be his first time inside a school. I hope you enjoy it Hagar. I would like to thank the following people for all their cooperation throughout the year: Rich Fox Dennis Grundman the rest of the Independent ' s staff for all their help Mr. Dik Browne Mary V. Kelly Connie Swanson of Bartelt ' s Studio for all her help Fa bienne Wees Gary Arndt Mr. Luther Mr. Toczek Mr. Taylor Mr. Anderson Mrs. Stevens Mrs. Bruce Mrs. Mahloch Dianna Semm Mike Diffenderfer- Our representative for all his help the rest of the faculty Al Schmahl I would like to especially thank Mrs. Stevens, our very patient sponsor. Bartelt ' s Studio. Dik Browne and Mary V. Kelly of King Features for all their help in getting us permission to use Hagar. Mr. Luther for all of his advice and help, and the rest of the Journalism Class for all their cooperation in getting the yearbook done. Thank you all.
