Pickett, Orchestra performs For varied activities Sounds of music fill the auditorium as thirty Pioneers combine their efforts under the direction of Dr. Samuel Siurua. This music group has played for Northwest's first musical, Brigadoon, the Christ- mas program, an all-school concert, and contests. The orchestra is divided into sections of fifteen string players and fifteen woodwind players. The Wind players are also members of the band. Five members of the orchestra were selected for the honor of playing with the All-State High School Orchestra. - Concert performances require extra practices. Charter member working in Publications is senior editor jody Allemenos. lody also won the outstanding senior girl in journalism award for her contributions to Telstar and Vanguard. Three editors Dennis Harrold, lody Allemenos, Ollie Matthews were elected into NHS's first Quill and Scroll. Staff form Honorar For eager journalists Quill and Scroll was organized to recognize and reward ability and achievement in writing and other phases of journalistic work in high school. The purpose of Quill and Scroll is to instill into students the idea of scholarship, to advance the standards of the profession of journalism by develop- ing better journalists, to strive for a higher code of ethics, to promote exact thinking, and to promote clear and forceful writing. Recognition of journalists which will be given annually was begun this year. Quill and Scroll charter chapter members were selected at the first initiation on April 22, 1965. The chapter was in- stalled by the Arlington High School Quill and Scroll Society. Nine members signed the Quill and Scroll charter. Klippel C, Marshel, Drum major directs Band at home games Marching Pioneers had a busy year in l964-65. The city-wide Jamboree, held in September, l964, was the beginning of the marching season for the band. Our band, along with other city bands enter- tained in the Jamboree with a halftime show spot- lighting state fairs. Marching Pioneers performed at all home foota ball games with shows demonstrating precision marching, dance routines, and varied types of music. Senior drum major Mike Basore led the marching Pioneers in their field maneuvers. He also led the band at the entertainment in the 4'Punt, Pass and Kick Contest and the State Marching Band Con- test at Southport in which the band won a first division rating.
