Summer Institutes Visited b Pioneers Through the summer as well as the winter months, NHSers participated in extra-special activities. Dur- ing the summer, several students atter1ded school- linked programs at various colleges in Indiana. Northwest was represented at the Student Council and Journalism Workshops at Indiana University in July. The first two weeks of the Journalism work- shop were concerned with newspapers and the last two weeks treated yearbook publication. Jim Down- ing studied social studies and government as our delegate to Boys' State, Indiana University, this sum- mer. NHS was represented for the first time at the Social Studies Institute at I.U. Our cheerleaders at- tended Smith-VValbridge Camp to learn new methods of cheering. WVhile there, they won a third place ribbon in competition. Some of our majorettes also represented NHS at the camp during the Majorette and Twirler Conferences. During the school year, twenty journalism students attended Press Day at Arlington High School to learn fundamentals in newspaper and yearbook writing. A four-year scholarship winner added another first. Senior Donna Lively won a first in instrumental competition, 31
