Diamondmen's effort Establish 5-7 record Against rough competition Northwest's 1964 varsity baseball team compiled a 5-'7 record in its first year of competition. Elected field captain, junior, Steve Smoot, led the team in hitting with a .457 average on 16 hits in 35 times at bat. He was followed by junior Rich- ard George with a .363 average. Sophomore Rod Smith and junior Bob Crossley handled the pitching duties with Smith collecting three victories and Crossley two. Richard George received individual honors by making second string all-city shortstop. junior third baseman, Steve VVoolsey, received honorable mention on the all-city team. The varsity diamondmen ended the '64 season on a three game winning streak with victories over Park School, Arlington, and Attucks by the scores of 3-l, 2-l, and 9-2. The first victory of the '64 season was a 7-3 con- quest of Mooresville. After the Mooresville victory the diamondmen traveled to North Central to give the runner-up county champs a 5-3 beating. junior letter winners, Bob Knobel and Mike Shanahan, loosen up fOr an upcoming match with Chatard to be played at South Grove. First year golf team Posts 10-5 record The varsity golf team finished its 1964 season with a 10-5 record. The team started their season by defeating Cha- tard 8-2. After winning two more from Sacred Heart and Howe by the scores of 10-2 and 8-2, the links- men suffered two losses in a row to Speedway and Manual. Defending city champion, Broad Ripple, was de- feated by the score of QM.,-SW. Next came a win over Park School by a score of ll-1. Traveling to Shortridge, sporting a 5-2 record, the team lost its third match by the score of ly!-105. After losing two matches the golf team came back and won five matches in a row. Arlington finally broke the streak. Playing in its first city tournament the golf team finished fifth. The team was led in the city tourna- ment by number one man, Mike Shanahan with a 39 for nine holes of play. In the sectional, the linksmen finished sixth. 116 GOLF TEAM-FRONT ROW: M. Shanahan, I.
