VARSITY WRESTLING-FRONT ROW: john Root, john Harvey, joe Case Paul Breen Craig Carr Mile Shanahan Dave Brown Mike Bealmear, Chuck Thomas, Bill Anderson, Tom johnson, Bill Ron BurCham Tom Hanley Ed Essey Bob McKee Steve Mlkels Angel, Don Dotlich, Dan Cuyne, Bob Archer, SECOND ROW: Grapplers end season With Winning 8-5 mark The Northwest varsity wrestling team under the coaching of Mr. Bill Treichler posted a winning record of 8 wins against 5 losses in their second sea- son of varsity competition. The wrestling team also competed in the city and sectional finishing 10th and 4th respectively. The top individual efforts were turned in by three sophomores. John Harvey placed second in the sectionals and fourth in the city. Don Dotlich was runner-up in the sectionals and finished with a 10-4-1 record. He wrestled in the 112 pound class while Harvey competed in the 95 pound class. Bob McKee wrestled in the 103 pound division and posted the best over all individual record of 13 and 3. Also in the sectional tournament Ron Burcham finished third while Craig Carr and Tom Hanley finished fourth. The reserve team with Mr. James Albright as coach finished with a 10-3 record. Their wins were over VVood, Scecina, Brebeuf, Howe, Decatur Cen- tral, Broad Ripple, Cathedral, Chartrand, and Wash- ington. Their losses were to Manual, Arlington, and Franklin Central. 112

One of Northwest-'s outstanding milers is junior letter winner Dave Wortman. Reserve, frosh teams Show fine prospects Northwest's varsity track hopefuls for next year ended their season with a record of 4 wins and no losses. In their first meet of the season the reserves downed Decatur Central by a 56-53 margin. This victory was followed by two more wins over Cathedral and Brebeuf. The reserve track season ended with a Victory over Lawrence Central and Carmel in a triangular meet. Northwest also had a freshmen track team that placed second in the city meet. Team scores for the first four places were as follows: Tech 45, North- west 35, Sacred Heart 33, and Washington 30. In the city meet the freshmen had three firsts. Mike 1,ahne in the 880, Ronnie Burcham in the shot put, and the mile relay team also placed first. Coach Vernon McCarty was head track coach and Coach Bruce Hamman was in charge of the reserve and freshmen teams. During the rainy season the teams practiced in the gym and in the unfinished wing on top of the home economics department. Regular practice was on the main parking lot as the track behind the school was flooded most of the time. 111

junior. Dave Busby was Northwest's first city champion. He won his city crown by placing first in the city cross-country at South Grove. SECOND ROW: Coach Ballinger, Steve Despot, jim Hail, Dave Busby, Steve Busby paces harriers To 7-3 second season Paced by '64 city champion, junior Dave Busby, and five other returning lettermen, the N.H.S. var- sity cross country team had a record of seven wins against three losses. Pioneer thinclads opened the season September 10th with a 21-34 win over Cha- tard. Next meet at 'Washington the harriers finished third. After that the Pioneers scored a perfect dual meet win over Chatard. After a third place finish in a triangular meet the thinclads participated in the Broad Ripple In- vitational, and finished third out of nine teams. Next the Pioneers won over Wood by a margin of 28 points. junior Dave Busby finished first in the city tournament as he ran a record breaking time of 10:01. Senior Dave Wortman finished in tenth place. The team placed fifth out of the twelve teams. The Pioneers also defeated Scecina and scored their second perfect meet.
