Cindermen tally .500 In initial track season The Pioneer trackmen ended their first season with a record of 2-2 in dual meet competition. Against Decatur, the trackmen lost a one point decision, 55-54. The Avon Orioles were the first victims, 7l-38. Cathedral Irish then beat the cinder- men 67-42. The dual meet season ended with a 57- 52 victory over Arlington High School. Broad Ripple Invitational came next with North- west finishing only two points out of 2nd position. The Pioneers next meet was a triangular meet with Carmel and Lawrence Central. The Pioneers finished third. In the last meet of the season the trackmen finished 3rd out of five teams, with a total of 50W points. Brett Keene had the only first for Northwest in the 880. The time was his fastest of the season, 2:04.5. In the city track meet at Tech, Northwest qualified 4 boys and both relay teams. The sectional was next. and Northwest managed to place one man. Bill Hedges scored one point by placing 4th in the broad jump. junior letter winner Brett Keene led all runners in the state track competition for half-mile to become Northwest's first state champ. Senior Steve Woolsey scores on a jump shot for two of his 21 points in a 61-51 Northwest victory over the Cathedral lrish. Sipe and O'Banion lead Frosh to -9 record NorthWest's freshmen basketball team started off the 1964-65 season on the wrong foot when they were defeated by Arlingtonls freshmen team, 37-35. The next game turned out to be a successful one for the Pioneers as they walloped Chartrand, 47-22. In their next encounter the freshmen were beaten by Westside rival Washington, 46-43. Avon and Sacred Heart were NorthWest's next victims by the scores of 36-25 and 41-35. They Were then defeated by Cathedral, 48-35, and Westlane, Eastwood was the Pioneer's next victim by the count of 41-34 while Howe took the measure of the Pioneers by a 49-36 score. After beating Broad Rip- ple, 48-46, in a triple overtime in their first game of the city tourney, the frosh started on a three game losing streak. The frosh lost their next three games to Scecina, Ben Davis, and Attucks. Northview and Manual were the freshmen teamis final victims of the year by 49-36 and 48-33 counts. Kenny Sipe was the leading scorer for the fresh- men team with 156 points in 16 games. Jack O'Ban- ion was the second leading scorer with 146 points. 109

SECOND ROW: jom White, Steve Wyant, john Geddes, Coach Hamman. Copp, Terry Wilson, Don Dotlich, jerry Richie, Steve Snoddy. One of Northwest-'s outstanding milers is junior letter winner Dave Wortman. Reserve, frosh teams Show fine prospects Northwest's varsity track hopefuls for next year ended their season with a record of 4 wins and no losses. In their first meet of the season the reserves downed Decatur Central by a 56-53 margin. This victory was followed by two more wins over Cathedral and Brebeuf. The reserve track season ended with a Victory over Lawrence Central and Carmel in a triangular meet. Northwest also had a freshmen track team that placed second in the city meet. Team scores for the first four places were as follows: Tech 45, North- west 35, Sacred Heart 33, and Washington 30. In the city meet the freshmen had three firsts. Mike 1,ahne in the 880, Ronnie Burcham in the shot put, and the mile relay team also placed first. Coach Vernon McCarty was head track coach and Coach Bruce Hamman was in charge of the reserve and freshmen teams. During the rainy season the teams practiced in the gym and in the unfinished wing on top of the home economics department. Regular practice was on the main parking lot as the track behind the school was flooded most of the time. 111
