Freshmen take lumps In second campaign Northwest High School's freshman football team experienced a disappointing season in the schools second year of competition. Competing with other high school freshman teams, the Northwest freshmen were able to win only one game. This bright spot in the season was a 15 to 13 victory over the visiting Decatur Central freshmen. Despite the coaching of Mr. Vernon McCarty the freshmen lost nine games while winning only one. They finished the season with a record of one win against nine losses. During their ten game schedule the freshmen lost to Broad Ripple, Sacred Heart, Arlington, Washing- ton, Westlane, Attucks, Scecina, Ben Davis, and North Central. During their ten game schedule the freshman opened with a 20 to 0 loss to Broad Ripple. They lost their next game to Sacred Heart Spartans by the same 20 to 0 count. Following these two losses they dropped three more games to the Washington, Westlane, and Ar- lington freshmen. Northwest's freshmen gridders ended their season with four more losses to Attucks, Scecina, Ben Davis, and North Central. 108 Senior halfback, Dick George, plunges for a four yard gain as Nortl'iwest's Ollie Matthews looks on.

Stonemen post 11-8 mark In second Winning season The 1964-65 Northwest reserve basketball team posted their second winning season in a row with a ll-8 record. , Under the coaching of Mr. Donald Stone the re- serves ended the season on a four game Winning streak. The reserves opened the season by winning five of their first seven games with their first triumph being a 45-39 decision over Chartrand. In the city tourney the reserves lost to Broad Ripple. Throughout the season the reserves posted wins over Chartrand, Mount Vernon, Chatard, Scecina, Sacred I-Ieart, Deaf School, Avon, North Central, Pike, Cathedral, and Plainfield. Sophomore Roy Pottenger led the reserves in scoring with a 12 point average followed by sopho- more Terry Miller with a 9.8 average. Tim Buckley and Dave Mahan were next in line with 6.5 and 4.6 averages. Pottenger scored the most points for the reserves in one game when he connected for 26 against Plain- field. Miller's high game of the season was 19 against North Central while Buckley's high game was 16 against Pike. I 107

Senior Steve Woolsey scores on a jump shot for two of his 21 points in a 61-51 Northwest victory over the Cathedral lrish. Sipe and O'Banion lead Frosh to -9 record NorthWest's freshmen basketball team started off the 1964-65 season on the wrong foot when they were defeated by Arlingtonls freshmen team, 37-35. The next game turned out to be a successful one for the Pioneers as they walloped Chartrand, 47-22. In their next encounter the freshmen were beaten by Westside rival Washington, 46-43. Avon and Sacred Heart were NorthWest's next victims by the scores of 36-25 and 41-35. They Were then defeated by Cathedral, 48-35, and Westlane, Eastwood was the Pioneer's next victim by the count of 41-34 while Howe took the measure of the Pioneers by a 49-36 score. After beating Broad Rip- ple, 48-46, in a triple overtime in their first game of the city tourney, the frosh started on a three game losing streak. The frosh lost their next three games to Scecina, Ben Davis, and Attucks. Northview and Manual were the freshmen teamis final victims of the year by 49-36 and 48-33 counts. Kenny Sipe was the leading scorer for the fresh- men team with 156 points in 16 games. Jack O'Ban- ion was the second leading scorer with 146 points. 109
