Reserves take city With 9-1-O record City Champs was the cry of the 1964 Northwest reserve football team as they won the city champion- ship with a 9-1 record. Paced by leading scorer, junior Ron NVood, the reserves reeled off nine straight victories after an opening loss to Broad Ripple. Under the coaching of Mr. jack Brown the re- serves rolled over Howe Q25-OD, Arlington Q19-6j, Chatard Q7-Oj, Southport Q29-OD, Ben Davis Q20-6j, Attucks Q26-65, Scecina Q33-13j, Ben Davis again Q19- 6j, and North Central Q26-6j. Only an opening game loss to Broad Ripple by the score of 20-13 marred the reserve teamls record. The reserves out- scored their opponents during the season 217 to 64 for an offensive average of 21.7 and a defensive average of 6.4. Ron Wood led the team through the entire season by scoring a total of 77 points. junior Mike Godan and sophomores Roy Potten- ger and Don Dotlich directed the team from the quarterback position throughout the season. THYIRD ROWl: Gridders notch 3-6-1 Second time around Against stiff competition Coach Bruce Hamman's '64 varsity football team compiled a 3-6-l record. After dueling with Wood in the jamboree North- west opened the season with a 33-7 loss to Ripple. A week later the gridmen tied Shortridge 6-6, with junior quarterback Steve Noe scoring Northwestls touchdown. In the Mooresville game Northwest took the mea- sure of Mooresville in a 34-0 rout. A week later against Attucks Northwest won handily, 28-6. Playing county foe, North Central, the gridmen refused to give up, and scored two last quarter touch- downs to pull the game out of the fire for a 20-18 victory. Senior Dick George led the second year varsity football team in scoring with a total of 42 points. Senior Bill Quade was chosen most valuable player for the second year in a row. Pioneer netrnen capture 8 Wins in 22 outings Northwest's 1964-65 varsity basketball team turned in a record of 8-14. Northwest scored victories over Chartrand, Cha- tard, Sacred Heart, Deaf School, Avon, Cathedral, Plainfield, and Deaf School again. In the city tourney Northwest dropped decisions to Attucks and Cathedral by 52-41 and 67-61 scores. In the final week of the season the Pioneers defeated Cathedral and Plainfield in a weekend sweep. In the Plainfield game the Pioneers set a school scoring record of 90 points. Northwest posted their first triumph in the Butler Sectional by beating Deaf School, 72-56. Northwest then lost to eventual winner, Ben Davis, by a 77-62 count to end the 1964-65 season. Senior Steve WVoolsey led Northwest in scoring with 17.6 average on 387 points in 22 games.
