NORTHWEST HIGH SCHQ INDIANAPOLIS 0 INDIAN Volume 2 Pace setting Pioneers accept green flagg Second year makes NHS four year school Pacing, growing, moving, patterning . . . these are the makings of a '64-'65 Pioneer. just as a pace car gets the race off to a good start, this year's NHS'ers set a pace for their successors. It was different this yearg we weren't all new. We were ready to take last year's precedents a step toward traditions. In this year we acquired a senior class and finally became a fullfledged four year high school. We underwent self-evaluation and were ac- credited by the North Central Association. These are a few of the ways we set the pace. In EVERYDAY EVENTS QPAGE 55, SPECIAL EVENTS QPAGE 175, and EXTRA-SPECIAL EVENTS QPAGE 285 we set a pattern. In September we were ready for the green flag to take the pace lap, and with our ACTIVITIES QPAGE 395, PARTICIPANTS CPAGE 595, and SPORTS QPAGE l035, we were on our way to pace the history of NHS. 3 At 8 o'cIock there are only I5 minutes to talk to friends, visit The main hall before school ft h I , a er sc oo, and during school is lockers, and finish homework assignments before school begins. a pleasant sight to all Pioneers. Beginning a new day 1,868 Pioneers arrived by bus, car and foot, and as the clock struck eight, we hurried down the halls and up the stairs, eager to start. Banging lockers and searching for the right books, we greeted and chattered with old and new friends. NVe, in this move to our classes, began to set a pace which would carry on through, and after, our years at NHS. llfhen the final bell rang we left the now empty halls and settled down in our classrooms to receive the instruction and knowledge which 88 teachers offeredg knowledge which would help us develop into fine American citizens who would set the pace for the future as well as at NHS. A lot of manygtalents holds everything from future athletes to marching musicians as well as serving as a parking lot. -W' W 'mi 5 Knowledge gained dail Aids Pioneer growth School is not all books and studying, but consists of an equally important insight, that of getting along with others. Pioneers practiced this Worldly knowledge every day while riding the buses to and from school and while lunching in the cafeteria. Such routine activities as purchasing paper in the bookstore, rushing to lockers between classes, greet- ing friends in the hall, and walking into a class- room brightened our day, and deepened this know- ledge. The opaque machine used by many of the 63 English classes, showed a pupilis work where it could be seen and criticized to his advantage. A student interested in honieniaking, foods, and clothing learn- ed how to increase her wardrobe by sewing and how to prepare a well-balanced rneal in food classes. Pioneers wishing to learn to drive learned this skill correctly and safely in one of the six driver's educa- tion classes. Physical education and family living served as a sound basis for health and living patterns which will be carried on throughout life. There were capable teachers for these courses, offered to forward-looking students at Northwest. Lettering classes at NHS prepare art students for commercial lettering and offers a good basic course for future art majors. 15 HS distinctions Produce special events Pacing the way for Northwest was not all work, but many times fun, for busy Pioneers. Special events dotted the NHS calendar in 135. These events ranged from pep sessions and dances to the musical production ot Brigadoon'l and a concert presented by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. In all cases, we tried to make these special events rousing successes. Friday night dances were a climax to all home basketball games. Each dance was sponsored by a school club or organization. Crowds of Pioneers gathered in the gym at several pep sessions. f rs'r' V V V . Members of NPT spent time With our marching band in their campaign for uniforms. On two Sat- urdays in October the band, Silverettes, and mem- bers oif NPT marched on residential streets in the Northwest area. As the band played, the Silverettes went from door to door collecting donations and distributing Honorary Memberl' stickers. On the NPT sponsored Sports Night the community was invited to come see the Varsity vs the seniors and the Dadys team give the teachers a run for their money. During December the NPT sold Christmas place settings. While Christmas cheer was spreading outside the school, the Student Council dug into its pocket to bring Christmas in - in the form of a big, bushy evergreen to brighten the halls for the holiday sea- son, thus adding a special touch. v . The squad is composed of five varsity, six junior varsity and four freshman cheerleaders. All cheerleaders attended the Eighteenth Annual High School Cheerleaders Conference at Indiana Uni- versity in November. Cheerleaders are an important part of every school. Their function is to promote the school spirit necessary for the team and the school. Also, the girls must set good examples in sportsmanship for the entire school. At the same time, each girl must maintain average or above-average grades in all subjects. The rewards of physical fitness along with the warm feeling of helping your team and your school are a few benefits of the hours spent practicing and performing. To buy uniforms and other equipment they sponsored 'several after game dances. Performing as varsity cheerleaders were Nancy McFalI, Carol Beets, Linda Switzer, Sherri Leonard, and Lorrie Sands. 46 the cheerblock to help lead the yells. White blouses and green ties were the trade-mark of Cheerblock members. Cheerleaders Lorrie Sands, Nancy lVlcFall, Linda Switzer, Sherri Leonard and Carol Beets lead the crowcl in a familiar routine. Many new reporters for the paper found it necessary to familiarize themselves with a new vocabulary of such words as lead out, and beat assignment. For the first time, the school newspaper was print- ed within the school. The print shop burned photo- graph negatives onto a sensitized aluminum alloy plate and used this plate to print the paper. The bi- weekly publication kept everyone informed about the latest school news, sports, and social events. Alternal-ing editors of Telstar were jody Allemenos and Marilyn Off, both seniors. Each girl worked as editor for one semester. 48 Looking at this year's dummy are co editors-in-chief of the Van- guard, seniors Dennis Harrold and Sandi Weaver. Vanguard summarizes Second year events Brains behind the scenes . . . Members of the publications department have worked since last May preparing the 1965 Vanguard. Co-editors Sandi Weaver and Dennis Harrold guided the staff in its effort to do a good job collecting pictures, captions, activities and headlines that were necessary for tl1e book. The staff was divided into several groups, each under an editor. Each editor, one each for pictures, copy, activities, faculty, sports, album-index, and patrons was responsible for seeing that his staff met all deadlines and turned in good work. Vanguard staff members, besides putting out the book, held several dances to raise money for expenses involved in publishing a yearbook. VANGUARD-FRONT ROW: N. Craig, E. Albro, S. Hague, D. Individual participants create unique aura Filling Northwest with imagination, originality Northwest has a right to be proud of its 1,746 y eager participants who helped make Northwest a l well run efficient place to increase their knowledge. The eighty-eight faculty members worked hard to prepare our 1,656 students prepare themselves for the academic world. Three hundred forty-eight sen- iors graduated, leaving behind 1,308 eager under- classmen ready to increase and strengthen Northwest in many aspects. The rhythm of daily life at Northwest, the mem- ories of a loyal body of people working to pace all other schools in maturity and the art of getting along with others makes us proud to present our Pace Setting Participants! 59 Northwest's first principal, Mr. Kenneth M. Smartz, fits daily home room announcements into his busy schedule. 91 Faculty, staff Pace 2nd year Northwest's 91 teachers and administrators helped the Pioneers set the pace in 407 classes, five days out of every week. Pioneers can be proud of their faculty with more than '70 per cent of the teachers holding Masters Degrees or higher. The pace in academic achieve- ment has been set for Northwest students to excel. The English and Science departments boast the largest number of teachers, each having 16 to its credit, followed closely by the Math and Business Education departments, each with eight. The Physical Education department has seven in- structorsg the Industrial Arts department has sixg and the Home Economics department has five. Last is the Music and Art departments, each having three teachersg and the smallest department the librarian. Special credit should be given to our principal, two vice-principals, Director of Guidance, and our two deans. They play an important role in the opera- tion of our school. Northwest is also proud of its new guidance program. This program, consisting of four teachers, has been organized to assist the home room teachers. 60 Mr. George N. Gale, vice-principal in charge of financing, has a job as the number one person in charge ot all money coming into the school and all of the money going out. Mr. Richard C. Cummins, guidance director, han an added responsibility when he became the first senior class sponsor for the first graduating class. Mr. Wayne H. Kincaid, vice-principal in charge oi school curri- culum, must plan schedules for the coming semester and arrange a feasible plan for the forward moving Pioneers. Mr. Paul D. Heaton and Mrs. Constance Zimlich, dean of boys counseling and helping Confused NHSefS and dean of girls respectively, spent most of their school hours Adams, Nancy C.: Head of Sociall Studies Department, Butler Unil- versity, BA., MA., St. Louis Unif- versity, Columbia University. i i Albright, james: Chemistry, Hanl- over College, B.S., Ball State Coll lege, Butler University, Assistant Football and Wrestling Coach. l l l Anderson, Everett: Mathematics, Wabash College, BA., Butler Unil versity, M.S. Sehoolis first seniors Complete final lap Northwest High School's first graduating class will consist of 369 students. The class is unique in the fact that they have, in effect, waited for two years to graduate. The present seniors were also the up- perclass men in their junior year since NHS had no senior class. For the first time, seniors elected class officers, assembled in one home room, and sat together in the cafeteria, where they were allowed to eat first every day. Talk of the senior prom, Sayonara, com- mencement, and vespers services seemed to fill the air as some seniors came down with that well-known disease Senioritis,'. Trading senior pictures took the place of note passing in many study halls as the newness of senior status took hold. The first senior year also afforded the chance for many first and pace setting traditions that will be a part of Northwest from now on. Class officers, class rings, commencement announcements, senior name cards, yearbooks, Dress-Up Day, Mock Elec- tions with seniors running for offices, and senior recognition at pep assemblies, all added to the herit- age of Northwest as its first graduating class antici- pated filing through its doors for the last time. Plans for the senior prom began on the first day of school. The prom was held at the I.U. Medical Center. Decoration and refreshment committees kept many seniors busy working after school for what seemed like an eternity before the prom. 82 Mr. Richard Cummins, head senior sponsor, and Ollie Matthews. president of the senior class informed students of up-coming events and senior committee meetings daily. 1 2 L 1 E 5 E 1 i s 2 5 I 1 ! 2 1 E s 5 5 Student Council Representatives IUNIORS-FRONT ROW: lan Davis, joe Case, Tami Lane, Mary lane Harrington, Denny Turner and Linda Mendez. But, even with all the equipment present, this does not insure a perfect yearbook. The per- sonalities which make a yearbook give any yearbook the depth it needs. This is where the editors make their presence known. Northwest's co-editors, Sandi lflfeaver and Dennis Harrold, put much effort and after school time into the 1965 Vanguard. Equally important are the other editorships. Sherri Leonard tackled the job of copy editor. Shan Hague served as activities editor. The student album and index was under the direction of Sandra Keeley. Sandra Davis was in charge of the faculty section and Sue Pence was the picture editor. Sports were the main concern of Bill Hedges and Steve Woolsey. The business department was under the management of Nancy 1WcFall. Mike While was in charge of circula- tion and Jody Allenienos served as patronls page editor. Miss Maureen Cunningham was faculty ad- visor. Professional credit is extended to Associates Engraver, Loudermilk Studios, Interstate Studios, Benton Review Publishing Company and S. K, Smith Cover Company. 128 4 IQILLI IN , .LI I U x f ' If, N7 5 f' 5 ' fx! I A5 Ig N 9 'I 15 I I I. 'I . I .I I W I , -J' Iv, A . , . I 'I J . L!
