THE OPEN ROAD We have built your 1959 TOHARI around a theme which we have chosen to call THE OPEN ROAD. Let the term intrigue your imagination, as it does ours, and set your hearts to dreaming. The open road--north, south, east, west it leads, wherever a dream can reach. It lies smooth and easy in the lush, green valleysg it winds, rough and rugged, over hills and across fields. It beckons us onward and outward, in- viting us to explore the mysteries that lie in the ever-changing reaches of the earth, of the mind, of the soul. Down the vista of time, it stretches out into infinity. Our years in school have taught us that all roads lie open to the willing traveler. We have learned to look for a road where none appears to exist. We know there is always one that will lead ultimately to the destination upon which we have centered our hopes and our ambitions, and we have learned to follow our own particular road with the confidence of courageous hearts, and with eager and questing minds. The staff has tried to make this issue of TOHARI a faithful and accurate record of this year during which we have traveled together. May it keep fresh in your memory the faces, the names, the events which belong to this part of your journey. May it serve always to remind you that here is one of the pleasantest and best- loved spots at which you have paused to renew your strength and to be refreshed. 4

Northwest began its first school year in the fall of 1955. When the doors opened there were 483 students and 21 faculty members. Northwest has expanded considerably during these four years and is crowded in spite of six new classrooms opened for use at the beginning of this year. Construction of a new auditorium is now underway. We have at present 670 students, and 27 faculty members. More than fifty courses are offered to our students. This picture shows only one wing of the modern building.
