Let the term intrigue your imagination, as it does ours, and set your hearts to dreaming. The open road--north, south, east, west it leads, wherever a dream can reach. It lies smooth and easy in the lush, green valleysg it winds, rough and rugged, over hills and across fields. It beckons us onward and outward, in- viting us to explore the mysteries that lie in the ever-changing reaches of the earth, of the mind, of the soul. Down the vista of time, it stretches out into infinity. Our years in school have taught us that all roads lie open to the willing traveler. We have learned to look for a road where none appears to exist. We know there is always one that will lead ultimately to the destination upon which we have centered our hopes and our ambitions, and we have learned to follow our own particular road with the confidence of courageous hearts, and with eager and questing minds. The staff has tried to make this issue of TOHARI a faithful and accurate record of this year during which we have traveled together. May it keep fresh in your memory the faces, the names, the events which belong to this part of your journey. May it serve always to remind you that here is one of the pleasantest and best- loved spots at which you have paused to renew your strength and to be refreshed. 4 Qfli??Q lied 45 ' ' Zgwvmlzz If Yxx: ff. yqzmd af' ,N V jimmy ,gl J f' ff' ZMKWXZW f f U Northwest began its first school year in the fall of 1955. When the doors opened there were 483 students and 21 faculty members. Northwest has expanded considerably during these four years and is crowded in spite of six new classrooms opened for use at the beginning of this year. Construction of a new auditorium is now underway. We have at present 670 students, and 27 faculty members. More than fifty courses are offered to our students. This picture shows only one wing of the modern building. The Northwest High School Library offers a wide selection of books in almost every field in its 3869 volumes. Miss Smith, the li- brarian, or a member of the library staff is on hand at hours beyond the school day to help students with their library problems. The lunchroom has a hard- working staff that prepares a well- balanced, inexpensive meal for the students. The new feature, the short lunch line, is popular with students who wish to buy only a snack. Our gymnasium s e r v e s many purposes. The most important use, of course, is for indoor athletic eventsg but until our new auditorium is completed, it also serves as our assembly and recreation hall. The modern facilities are a source of pride to all members of the student body. MZMW yaf 1 WJ , . ,eg My Q , MN Q Q XX 1 I I1 . v N 1 X. if M , ' X N , :gy . ff w f i 5. ,., WJ gwwaf Z3 fffmz Mrs. Fay Rives Benton With the opening of Northwest four years ago, Mrs. Benton joined the faculty here, coming from the home economics department at Old Town. During these years, she has served the school and the student body, both individually and collectively, with a tireless and selfless devotion that has sought neither recognition nor reward. Every Friday during football season, the team has, for these four years, had its evening meal prepared and served under the supervision of the home economics department. Extra time after school to help a class, a club, or an individual prepare for a tea or a party is a service that students frequently request of Mrs. Benton and unfailingly receive. Plan a banquet, serve a dinner, select a color scheme, every day brings its quota of chores that lie without and beyond the bounds of obligation and duty. Mrs. Benton is quickly and quietly efficient in any emergency. Whoever loses a button than cannot be replaced by the ever-serviceable pin hurries to her for first aid. Both major and minor damagesto clothing and hearts are daily offered her to be repaired. She is never too busy for them and always manages to send the victim away with injuries no longer visible, even if the repair cannot be permanent. Because of all these things, and because she is herself gracious, kind, wise, and forever yoimg to understand the ways of youth, we offer her this work of our minds and hearts and hands in dedicating to her this edition of our yearbook. 8 Kar fr' 990 N ,nw ,.
