This 1978 Chieftain is dedicated to Mr. Russel! H. Bethel who dedicated eleven years of his life in service to our school system and community. Evidence of his dedication rests first of all in the fact that in an era of rapid turnover in school administra- tion, he stayed with us for eleven years, giving a much- needed continuity to our school's development. He has been faithul in fulfilling his duties, seldom ever taking a day of sick leave. Though five separate school units in the system meant multiple activities, he rarely missed attending an event on the school schedules which meant almost every night away from his home. This particular eleven year period involved difficult challenges in most school systems — student unrest, walkouts and riots, faculty and employee dissatisfac- tion, teacher strikes, lack of funds for operation, and educational traditions severely challenged. These were, for the most part, avoided in the Northwest Local District, largely through Mr. Bethel's foresight and guidance. An added problem was the rapid in- crease of our district population, w hich brought with it the need for additional personnel and school facilities. This problem was met by well planned expansion un- der Mr. Bethel's direction. Anyone familiar with the school district is well aware of its progress. Mr. Bethel's varied experience in the educational field was of benefit to our school district. He came to us having served as a high school teacher, an athletic coach, a school superintendent, a Stark County high school supervisor, a coordinator of federal programs, the author of the county's plan for vocational educa- tion, as well as an instructor in the U.S. Air Force for four years. Any leader at best is often a lonely person. In times of tension and difficult decision, Mr. Bethel had to rely on his own judgment and the courage of his convic- tions, meanwhile knowing he had the welfare of hun- dreds of children and youth at stake. The Bethel Family has become very much a part of our community as we have shared joys and sorrows: and the community has been enriched by their contri- butions. The great use of life, wrote William James, “is to spend it for something that will outlast it. Wc arc sure that the school structures and educational pro- grams that Mr. Bethel has fostered here in the best in- terests of young people will be lasting and rewarding to him in the future. Nothing that was worthy of the past departs; no truth or goodness realized by man ever dies, or can die; but is all still here, and recognized or not, lives and works through endless changes. -Thomas Carlyle
