it Vl ULLi-tUU LrtV c A N A L 0 H 1 O F U L T O N IN DEDICATION TO MISS MARY E. FLETCHER . . Above all, however, it is through their lives that teachers give their greatest lessons. By living honestly, they teach honesty; by being human?, they preach humanity; by showing sympathy and understanding to the least in their care, they help to make these virtues a part of all those about them; and by living beautifully, they plant the ha- bit of beauty in young lives. In their patience and self-sacrifices, they say more than a thousand sermons are able to say. By example rather than by precept, they teach. Their language is not of dogma, but of deeds. It is with a deep sense of satisfaction and a keen appreciation of excellence in teaching that we proudly dedicate this yearbook to Miss Mary Fletcher. For her loyalty to Northwest High School, for her dedication to her many students who came in search of knowledge and understanding, for her faithful endurance, and for the steadfast integrity and honesty portrayed, we admiring- ly say thank you to someone who has inspired us to be better educators and more understanding human beings. We realize that knowledge may be gained from books, but we further realize that the true love of knowledge is transmitted only by the personal contact of the teacher. She communicates her own joy in learning, and shares with her students the best treasures of her mind. She lights the. many candles, which in later years will shine back to cheer her. No one has deserved better to be praised as a teacher. No one is more worthy of the title teacher than Miss Mary Fletcher. FLETCHER Northwest High School sits on a gentle hilltop in a semi-rural area very near the center of the Northwest Local School District. Its 43-acre campus overlooks the Tuscarawas River and vestiges of the historic Ohio-Erie Canal. Because the Northwest Local School District is the result of a consolidation of the former Canal Fulton Local and West Franklin (or Clinton) Local School Districts, the high school was constructed halfway between Canal Fulton and Clinton. In the late 1940 s, it had become apparent that neither of these two districts would have sufficient enrollments to meet standards being set by the State of Ohio to receive State aid and yet operate as separate systems. Each community considered various solutions. Canal Fulton discussed a consolidation with the rest of Lawrence Town- ship, for the Tuslaw School System was not yet in existence. It was suggested that Marshallville might be included since through extended bus routes, Canal Fulton had annexed territory several miles into Wayne County. The Clinton community considered merging with Manchester, or even with the Norton System. None of these plans proved satisfactory. Finally because of the close proximity of the two towns and the similar geographic backgrounds-- but only after long deliberation and many discouraging disagreements--the consolidation was authorized by the Stark County Board of Education in August of 1953. Thus, the entire district involving parts of three counties came under its jurisdiction, except for a small part of West Franklin Township which was transferred to Norton. The new consolidation became known as the Northwest Local School District merely because of its location in the northwest section of Stark County. In order to treat each community fairly, the new board of education (representing each community) measured the distance between the two towns and fortunately was able to purchase 43 acres of a farm at the halfway mark, 1 1 2 miles from each town. This site for the new high school was considered good because of its scenic beauty, its acreage for ex- pansion, the abundance of water from the new wells, and the trunk line of the East Ohio Gas Company nearby to assure ready fuel. In September of 1953, the high school students from Clinton were transported to Canal Fulton and all housed in the high school building there. This student body numbered approximately 260. The bond issue of $500,000 was passed the first time it was submitted to the voters. By September 1956, the new building was completed and ready for use. It was dedicated with fitting ceremony on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, November 4, 1956. As visitors streamed through the new building and over the campus, it seemed commodious with 15 class rooms, a large gym, cafeteria, shop area, science and home economics labs, a lighted football field in a natural amphitheater, various fields for other sports and practices, and ample parking area. At that time the student body numbered 305 and the faculty, 15. The Canal Fulton and Clinton Elementary Schools, along with SS. Philip G James, provided the oncoming students. However, this seeming wealth of space was short-lived. By 1960 there were 362 students. By 1965 the student body was approximately 400, reaching the original capacity of the building. To meet the needs of growing enrollment, a new Middle School was opened on the south hill of the campus for grades 6, 7, and 8, thus relieving the congestion in the Canal Fulton and Clinton Elementary Schools which had already under- gone several additions. The high school band room was remodeled into a library. A new bandroom complete with offices, a wing with four new classrooms, rest rooms, and storage facilities; and an office suite of three rooms were also added. These additions were all in use by 1966, and the space again seemed ample. By 1970, there were 447 students and 27 teachers. Since that time, the shop area has been enlarged, a science annex contructed, a bus garage with a storage area ad- jacent, a separate athletic hrilding, the W.S. Stinson Elementary building for grades 5 and 6, a mobile home remodeled for a radio station, and most recently a suite of rooms leased for the district administrative offices. The student body presently numbers 673 and the faculty 35, plus 2 counselors and 2 principals. Thus, the student body has gained 413 students above its original 260. This is the first-half of the story of Northwest High School. The closing pages of the CHIEFTAIN continue to relate the story of growth and improvement. 4 A LEGEND OF GROWTH 5 FROM THE PAST The Pete Zuni farm which is now the campus of Northwest High School. In the early hours of the morning, the tempera- ture had fallen from 29 degrees to zero, and with wind speeds of approximately 50 mph., a chill factor of--45 degrees was with us. Visibility was zero as people headed home from schools, factories, and businesses to try to beat the storm. All over the state, families who lived along the streets and high- ways took in stranded motorists as the drift- ing snow had closed many roads statewide. Drifts were reported as high as twelve feet. The long, cold winter also caused gas cur- tailments to many area schools, and some were forced to close for a week or two. We at Northwest were fortunate; our school was not nearly as burdened with energy problems as those around us. The cold, hard winter of '77 will also be long remembered for the warmth of widespread human kindness it kindled. People were forced by the sub-freezing winds and drifting snow to give of themselves in order to help others. It was a hardship that perhaps, looking back, helped mankind to grow together once more and to realize how much each of us needs his fellow man. NEWS BULLETIN: CHANCEOF FLURRIES TONIGHT! THE WILD WINTER OF '11: THE WORST BLIZZARD . . . EVER! Snow drifts almost block the entrances to the outside science rooms. Giant snow drifts line the school building. The first challenge after consolidation was to mold the two districts into one— to have two faculties and two student bodies become one in aim and spirit. New school banners and cheers, united efforts with teams, the band, clubs, and friendships aided in achieving unity and growth. As the school grew, the curriculum was expanded by adding Spanish, advanced math, sciences, vocational courses in business education, and home economics. Mini courses in English and social studies were developed to give students more selections, as were metal work in shop and general courses for the average student. Special education courses were added for the exceptional student. The vocal music and art departments are presently growing. Extra-curricular activities have been expanded as well. In sports, to football and basketball have been added baseball, wrestling, golf, and cross country; and for girls, basketball, volley ball, and track. Sports records have been good with one trip to the regionals in basketball, Senate League championships in basketball, football, and wrestling within the last four years, and track records have also been good. Northwest's wrestling team sent representatives to State in 1974 and 1975. The girls' basketball team was runner-up in the district championship in their first year of play. The band has placed superior in every state contest less one and has oecome known nationwide through clinics and appearances at National Band Conventions. Several departments have clubs to further the interests of the student. The Library Club handles all audio-visual equipment. Some representation of the Latin Club has attended every State Convention since 1962 and 12 National Con- ventions. Our Latin students have won honors in state and national competitions. The school has had several citations in the National Merit contest, one semi-finalist, and one finalist. Many students have won scholarships to college—both academic and athletic. A chapter of the National Honor Society was organized in 1959 and a traditional annual recogni- tion banquet was initiated for outstanding scholars. A special pride is the radio station, WNWR, which first began broadcasting for Old Canal Days in 1975 and is the second largest educational station in the state of Ohio. WNWR is totally operated by students with a station manager who volunteers his services and a faculty advisor. In Northwest's first year, Mr. William Knight was superintendent of Canal Fulton activities, the high school, and Canal Fulton grade school; and Mr. William Stinson of Clinton activities. Since then, Northwest has been under the leadership of four executive heads: Mr. LarryPelly, 1954-1958; Mr. Elwood Wheaton, 1958-1963; Mr. Richard Mace, 1963-1967; and Mr. Russell Bethel, 1967-present. The seven principals are as follows: Mr. Robert Ketter, 1953-1958; Mr. W.S. Stinson, 1958-1968; Mr. Edward Hawley, 1968-1969; Mr. Ronald Watson, 1969-1970; Mr. Alfred Glass, 1970-1972; Mr. Gene Feucht, 1972-1975; and Mr. Nick Corral, 1975-present. Many Northwest Alumni have done well. A rough estimate would be that from 23 graduation classes, about 200 have graduated from college, approximately 75 have trained as teachers, and 30 as nurses. Five students have their Ph.D's. There are three medical doctors, one optometrist, one dentist, and a few students in medical training. There are four college-trained air pilots in the armed services, one lawyer, and several engineers. Both the Canal Fulton and Clinton communities have always shown a real interest in education. As early as 1829, a stone school house was built in Clinton. Canal Fulton organized its first high school building in 1855. The imposing three- story Victorian building in Canal Fulton was dedicated in 1887 by William McKinley. Each town has seemed to consider its school the center of community activity. Both communities have done a great deal to support and develop Northwest High School. Individuals and sports-minded groups have contributed many hours to the stadium and athletic building; in fact, in constructing the athletic building, no tax funds were used whatsoever. The Tribe has been most generous to Northwest athletes, both boys and girls. Their earned monies have provided such things as free jackets, meals, trips to Cleveland games, and many other incentives. Band parents have equally supported the music program. Community and civic- minded groups have sent delegates to various conferences and conventions, such as the Cincinnati Foreign Affairs Confer- ence and Boys' and Girls' State. The Rotary has sponsored the Paul Swigart Memorial Scholarship Fund for a number of years. Local organizations have provided flags, first aid equipment, landscaping, and many hours of volunteer services which have enriched the school in various ways. The community, though having no large taxable industry, has always had a comfortable living, first with good farm land, then the Canal and the grain business, later coal and oil, and more recently employment in nearby towns and small businesses developing locally. This community has been growing by much new building, as one can see by enrollment figures. There are 12 new allotments presently being developed in the area, and Stark County has been designated as one of the fastest growing areas in the State of Ohio. The future for Northwest High School looks good. To the historical background of the Old Canal and to the heritage of a real concern fcr education, new residents are bringing enthusiasm and stimulation for a better Northwest High School. MARY E.
