The year was highlighted by Northwest posting wins over teams representing the four states of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Kentucky, As usual, (3 years in a row), N. W. won the 7th Annual Invitational Tourney but by the largest number of points and champions ever. In the final meet of the year the Varsity walked by Wadsworth to take victory number 75. Band supported its school and community in several ways. Not only do they march for all home and away football games, but they march in all community parades. The band participated in the Loyalty Day Parade. Me- morial Day Parade, and Old Canal Days Parade. For the '70 marching eason, the band presented such famous hits as Saint Louis Blues.” Hi De Ho. Tommy,” Bridge Over Troubled Water,” Sweet Georgia Brown. Hawaii Five-O, and Leaving on a Jet Plane. 94 Puff The high school band, under the direction of Mr. Emil W. Puffenberger, has become a major organization at Northwest. His flair for the dramatic expressiveness, which produces the finest quality of music, makes the band the most enjoyable entertainment. Mr. Puffengerger has spent most of his life building up a better than average band. He is, in fact, one of the most well-known band directors in the state. Mr. Puffenberger has also taught at a summer school for high school musicians at Baldwin-Wallace college in Berea, Ohio. Of the many things he has organized and directed, he is best known for the Canal Fulton Band Clinic held each January for 30 years. This event brought many world famous conductors, artists and bands to our school. He was also a recipient for the Mac Award in 1966 (being chosen the outstanding band director of the year), along with the Edwin Franko Goldman Award in 1970 (for outstanding contributions to the advancement of high school bands). 95 Senior Members Are Here majorettes (Debbie Dittmer. They had the responsibility of leading the band, and giving instructions on the marching field and in parades. This year was their first year at this type of leadership. There are eight majorettes this year. They are captain Kathy Shondel, Pam Nicholard. Debbie Dittmer, Debbie Roach, Anita Swigart, Brenda Fraser. Jo Lane Walsh, and Jane Bailey. Their job is to work out routines of twirling and dancing to do while the band does its show, or as features during half-time. At the end of last year, fire routines were added. By democratic process, the band chooses senior officers each year. Every office has different responsibilities, but all-in-all they lead up to organizing the band and setting a fine example of the caliber that an ‘outstanding’ band needs. Elected were Terry Naylor, President; John Gay, Vice President; Marcy Stoffer, Secretary; Ilona Haring, Treasurer. A typical meeting of band officers and the director. 97 ROW ONE: T. Zimmerman, M. Playing the Right Note The Northwest High School Band, consisting of 91 members is under the direction of Mr. W. W. Puffenberger and the assistant director Mr. W. J. Hall. During the year the band gave three concerts: on December 13. February 14. and May 16. All were attended well by the com- munity. For the December concert, solos were sung and different instruments were featured. This year makes the 32nd year Northwest has participated at the district and state contests. Each year the band has achieved an T (superior) rating. At Commencement, the band supplies the graduation music. In order to make this a successful procession, it requires practicing of both the band and the graduating seniors. Throughout the year, nightly sectional practices are held. Members of the particular sjctions and both Mr. Puffenberger and Mr. Hall attend these. This is one of the ways of showing the dedication of both students and directors. 9 101 SCHOOL BOARD: 1st ROW: Mrs. Beverly Begert, Clerk; Richard filer; Robert Kelsey; Stanley Shondel. 2nd ROW: Russell Bethel; Mrs. Janet Suderow; Dr. Martin Smilek.
