We are hoping this book will be as a mirror to reflect these memories and that included in this annual is at least one memory for each and every member of Northwest High School. 1968 Annual Staff Table Of Contents A Typical Day Inside the Doors of NHS New Library Encourages Study m {nmtr ttin Our new library is the school’s center of knowledge. Many students and faculty mem- bers spend countless hours in research, home- work assignments, or just reading for their own enjoyment. Among the new facilities of our library are an increased number of books, study carrels, individual study rooms, a faculty room, and additional visual aids. Through the modernization of our library, it provides much needed space and eliminates the once cramped conditions which limited its use. Our school is very proud of this new ad- dition. ADMINISTRATION Northwest Board of Education at one of their many meetings: (left to right) Donald Swigart, Clerk-Treasurer John Juersivich, John Morgan. Dr. Martin Smilek, Dr. Duane Bricker, and J. Stanley Shondel. Partially pic- tured is Superintendent Russell Bethel. Our school system is run by very capable men. We generally think of the school as being headed by the faculty, often forgetting that there are seven hard-working men actually be- hind the scenes. These men make the major decisions and find solutions for the many com- plicated situations that come about during the course of a school year. We would like to express our deepest appreciation to these men for their dedication to our school and our community. 12 The president of the Board of Education performs many duties during his term. Of these, participating in graduation, is certainly one of the most rewarding. RUSSELL BETHEL, SUPERINTENDENT Mrs. Ione Grover, Mrs. Rose Esler, and Mrs. Phyllis Smith are busy with one of their many duties as secretaries in the Northwest Local School District. MRS. GROVER Mrs. lone Grover goes cheerfully and ef- ficiently about her new job as secretary to Mr. Bethel. Even though her duties require many skills and personal qualities, she is ready and willing to meet whatever challenge may arise. 14 MRS. SMITH One man who never has a free min- ute is our clerk-treasurer, Mr. Juersivich. He takes care of numer- ous duties dealing with our school. We are glad to welcome him into our system this year. Mrs. Phyllis Smith assists Mr. Juer- sivich with his many tasks. In addi- tion to her regular duties, she is al- ways ready and eager to help out if and when she may be needed. IS OUR PRINCIPAL MR. STINSON Not only is Mr. W. S. Stinson an efficient school administrator, he is also an under- standing friend. Even though he is burdened with the responsibility of operating the school, he shows great interest in all Northwest stu- dents and the extra-curricular activities. He is always eager to help a student seek a solution to his problems. MRS. RHOADES Writing out passes and making morning and afternoon announcements may be the only two things our students realize our secretary does every day, but actual- ly she is the backbone of our school ad- ministration. She not only has to carry out the duties of a regular secretary, but must remain cool, calm, and collected. Every member of the administration ap- preciates the work--both mental and physical that she does and we would like to recognize her for her efforts. Assistant Principal, ALPHA MAYFIELD The job of assistant principal is a difficult one and not easily performed. Mr. Mayfield works in close contact with the stu- dent body every school day. He is involved with their problems and understands their need for guidance. We appreciate his friendliness and most of all his willingness to help. This was the invitation given to the members of the Junior and Senior classes which led them to the fantasy world of OVER THE RAINBOW . As each person entered through Dorothy's house, they repeated her journey on the yellow brick road to the Emerald City. On their journey they met the Muchkins, the scarecrow, the tin man, the cowardly lion, and of course the good witch who led them to the Emerald Castle. An enchanting journey somewhere over the rainbow. Charles Wagner, valedictorian Just another milestone. Graduation . . . John and Bob are our Indians' Captains. They are al- so both seniors. These two hard working players led our team with a rugged scoring combination, as well as defense. They Both were cnosen for the Akron Beacon Journal's All-Senate League All-Star Team. Defense Is Indians’ Game This season has been full of many exciting games. Our Indians got off to a slow start but came back fighting to come out 9-9 over all. Our team has kindled a new spark in the fans and in the school. This spark is Spirit. If the team knows the school's behind them, they'll win. The Indians worked all year to win. In the tournament at Lake they played like there was only one way, and that was to win. Our Indians played their best game of the season against Mogodore, who last season beat us by 28 points in the tournament. This year our team was determined to win but due to Mogadore's excellent shooting we lost by 6 points. This was a real heart breaker for the team and the school. Wrestlers Notch I I-I Record This year our wrestling team, under coach Mayfield, worked hard all season and comprised a very fine 11-1 record. This record is the best mark in the school's wrestling history. A tremendous amount of effort by every member of the team resulted in our school being recognized as one of the finest wrestling schools in the area again this year. The team motto was you meet the best at North- west. The only loss of the season was a 1-point setback to Cloverleaf. The team traveled as far as Marietta rep- resenting our school and they surely can be proud of their excellent season. 67-68 Results WE THEY Canton Oakwood ------ Canton Lehman ----- - • . - - - 50 - 2 Marietta - - - - 25 - 12 Cloverleaf - - - - 21 - 22 Rittman 43 - 8 Cleveland Lutheran East - - 53 - 0 East Liverpool - - - 31 - 12 Alliance 15 Roots town - — ------ - - - - 24 - 17 Manchester Doylestown • - - - 48 - 2 Buckeye ---- 19 “357 129 61 ALAN NETTLE Seniors Dominate Varsity Squad The '67-'68 wrestling team was dominated by seven seniors. Special thanks should be given to Mr. Griffith who has permitted the team to use Spring Hill Country Club as their home course. BOB SWOGER LARRY REYNOLDS JERRY REYNOLDS J. C. SCHWENDIMAN Bowling Team Newest Sport At NHS The members of our bowling team are selected by a roll-off of which the five highest players win team position. Alternates stand by to relieve a member if he is absentor if his average drops before a match. There are more matches than practice sessions for the team. They participate in a game once a week for three weeks and practice one night during the 4th week. The team members must provide their own transportation. However, Mr. Williams, their coach, takes as many with him as he can. Their home court, Slovene Allies of Barberton, provides the mem-' bers with bowling shirts and offers allies at half-price for all practice sessions. We know how she felt. Over the years, dozens of companies have challenged the leadership of Hoover cleaners . . . unsuccessfully. We've maintained our leadership through a constant program of product development and improvement for our cleaners, and for our many other products. So, in effect, we keep running faster and faster to stay where we’ve always been ... in first place. It isn’t easy, but it would be a lot tougher without the dedicated skills of all the men and women of The Hoover Company. The quality of our products depends upon the ability of the men and women we employ. So it's no surprise that our employment policy is based only on your ability. Not on your place of birth, your religious faith, or the color of your skin. One of our vice presidents describes it this way: We hire people.'' We also recruit people on college campuses, train people in apprenticeship programs, promote people to better, more responsible jobs. Our long-standing policy has been clearly and simply stated and restated as follows: The Timken Roller Bearing Company re- affirms its policy of treating all employees and applicants, whether or not they are members of minority groups, equally ac- cording to their individual qualifications, ability, experience and other employment standards.” It means we can select from all qualified job seekers, not justa chosen few. It gives us a larger labor market from which to pick. And that’s what we pick ... the qualified. It takes qualified people, working under the best conditions, to make the best Timken' bearings, Timken steel and Timken rock bits. The Timken Roller Bearing Company.
