the class of 1966 presents the CHIEFTAIN Northwest High School Canal Fulton, Ohio FEATURING THE PEOPLE AND THE The wealth of our school is the people she produces. Our school will be judged, not by size or location, but by the quality and ability of the students who will represent her through the years to come. As we, and each succeeding class, take our place in life, we know that Northwest will always hold a place in our lives. These pages represent the people, places, and things that made Northwest a place of which to be proud throughout the past year. 2 EVENTS THAT MAKE OUR SCHOOL . . . Davis Miss Tina Konya reigned as queen of the Second Annual Northwest High School Wrestling Tournament. Tina had the honor of presenting our wrestlers with their first team trophy since the introduction of wrestling as a major sport here at N.H.S. 59 60 MUSIC NHS CHAMPION The Northwest High School Concert Band, consisting of 80 Members is one of the largest bands in the history of our school. Highlights of this year included a trip to Cleveland to play a Con- cert for the American School Principals. We also presented concerts during the year to our community in December, February, and May, These concerts attracted not only our own com- munity, but music people from far and wide. The band also sponsored a band clinic in January which is attended by the best bandsmen from Ohio and surrounding states. Last, but not least we mention its contest record of twenty-six straight first place ratings at State Contest. We, the senior members of the band, wish to express our appreciation to Mr. E. W. Puffenberger, who has been responsible for the growth and development of our music department through these many years. Such a combination of musical ability, leadership, and fine character is rare; and our school and community are most fortunate to have kept Mr. Puffenberger over a period of so many years. This year we were very proud to have with us our Assistant director Mr. Bryson Fillmore, who with his deep concern and dedication made this year both educational and enjoyable. 62 CONCERT BAND Sec. It is from this formation that the Alma Mater was played. This 80 piece musical organization included a drum major, and seven majorettes. One of the main factors contributing to the success of the Northwest High School Marching Band is its director Mr. Emile W. Puffenburger. Mr. Puffenburger has written, arranged, and directed many wonderful Band shows since he has been at Northwest. This year we are proud to introduce to you our assistant director Mr. Bryson Fillmore. He has given us a lot of appreciated help, and we are very proud of him. Hats off to Mr. Puffenburger and Mr. Fillmore for there fine shows of the 1965-66 season. 65 NORTHWEST HIGH MAJORETTES BACK ROW--Becky Wagner, Billie Williams, Kessie Williams, Linda Handly, Sue Boyd. If you’re about to enter your senior year, there's a good chance it will.., but you must remain in school, and earn a high school diploma. Who says so? The U.S. Census Bureau. Its figures show graduates earn about $35,000 more before they retire than those who drop out in the first three years. Sure, a diploma's no guarantee of a good job. But personnel managers do ask themselves: If he didn’t finish high school, how do I know he’ll stick it out here.” Remember. Unemployment among dropouts is twice that of the general popu- lation. And dropouts stay unemployed longer! Yet, despite these disturbing statistics, three of ten high school students leave without diplomas. Some 750,000 high school students will quit next year. Can you afford to be one of them? The Timken Roller Bearing Company, Canton, Ohio. Campfield—Hickman Funeral Home Grant M.
