FOREWORD As our four years at Northwest come to an end, we, the Class of 1964, would like to recapture the highlights of our final high school year in the following pages. We express our sincere gratitude to the administration and faculty who have given us their guidance and encouragement when we needed it most. In the coming years we will always hold a place in our hearts for Northwest -- not the size or location, but the wonderful experiences we have shared here, the achieve- ments, and the knowledge we have acquired. Our education and these precious memories will be valuable assets in our future. 2 JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY May 29, 1917 -- November 22, 1963 Ask not what your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country. ((ST T November 22, 1963 --a day never to be forgotten. As we grow older we will forget much of what has occurred during our high school years, but this date can never be forgotten or dreamed away, no matter how much we want to block it from our minds. On this day, the bullet of an assassin struck down a man, the 35th President of the United States. There is little we must say about J.F.K. for his life, too short, speaks for him. He was a wonderful man, dedicated to upholding our Constitu- tion and gaining equality for all human beings. He was his own profile in courage. The whole world is poorer because of the loss of this man, but we can all be better Americans because John Fitzgerald Kennedy has passed our way. We have learned what hatred, bitterness, ignorance, and misun- derstanding can do. We have witnessed a tragedy. It took only an instant to teach us, but in this minute space of time a man who had enlightened the world ceased to exist. If the citizens of this country, and of all other nations have been able to gain something from witnessing this tragic event, he will not have died in vain. Let us search for the lesson God was trying to show us through this loss. Let us continue the work of this great man. Accomplishing these deeds would be the greatest trib- ute we could make to him. Thus, to the memory of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, we proudly and most humbly dedicate our yearbook. Your memory is a keepsake With which we'll never part. God has you in his keeping, We will always have you in our hearts.' 4 MR. JOHN D. MORGAN Vice-President MR. J. STANLEY SHONDEL MR . DONALD P. SWIGART MR. DON H. McMILLEN MR. DUANE H. Escorting her was Frank Cic. Queen Catherine's attendants were senior Diana Lepley, escorted by Darrell Hanselj junior Judy Ludwig, escorted by John Nelson; sophomore Linda Eb- bert, escorted by Denny Stephan; and freshman Susie Boyd, escorted by Gene Gabor. Charlie Ikins and Jessica Smith bore Her Majesty's crown and flowers. Need we say any- thing? This is some thing understood at a glance. View into the garden between the branches of a ming tree. Beauty is truth, truth beauty; that is all ye know in this world, and all ye need to know. MACBETH PLAY CAST JUNIOR PLAY CAST Because of a great deal of time and effort, the Junior Class Play of 1963, The Charm School, was a tremendous success. A fine job of directing was done by Mr. Nick Cor- ral . The story revolved around a young automobile salesman, Austin Bevans, who inherited a girls' boarding school along with its many problems. The play was considered by many to be one of the best plays ever performed at Northwest High School. 100 GRADUATION — CLASS OF 1964 Betsy Chandler, co-valedictorian, addressed the graduating class and an auditorium packed with about 1,400 people. The other co-valedictorians were Keith Crawford and Darlene May. The Honorable John R. Milligan, judge of Domestic Relations Division of the Stark County Common Pleas Court, delivered the Commencement Address. The big moment for every graduate — but especially for John Nelson because he had twelve years of perfect at- tendance. For this singular achievement Judge John Milligan, on behalf of the Canal Fulton Rotary Club, awarded him a fifty-dollar prize. In another moment it was all over — or maybe it was just the beginning for Gene Gabor. John McLaughlin, a seventy-year alumnus of Canal Fulton High School, gave Gene a half-tuition scholarship to Mount Union College during the graduation ceremonies. The Cap and Gown Ceremony. Senior Sec'y Carol Juersivich and Prexy Darlene May presented their caps and gowns to Junior Sec'y Lee Ellen Swoger and Prexy Eugene Dannemiller in exchange for a wreath of scarlet roses. One rose was given to each graduate. This ceremony symbolized the handing down of Senior privi- leges and authority to the suc- cessive Senior class.
