THE CLASS OF 1963 PRESENTS the CHIEFTAIN Foreword With the completion of our four years at Northwest we look back over the fond memories and experiences II we have had here. Our Senior year has been the cli- I max of our high school career. Within the pages of the ”1963 Chieftain” we tried to record the highlights of our last year at Northwest. Our administration and faculty have worked faithfully to mold our characters and nourish our minds. To them we express our heartfelt gratitude for their kindness and inspiration. As we leave high school behind and take our places in the world, we hope we can use the knowledge we have acquired at Northwest as a foundation for life's work. No value can be placed upon this year. These deep and rewarding years will remain with us forever. DEDICA TION Because he has become a part of Northwest High School through his years of service and dedi- cation to the student body, and because he presents the qualities of an ideal teacher, we take great pleasure in dedicating our edition of the Chieftain to Mr. Martin, and wish him good luck and continued success. Schulp 24-Hour Ambulance Service SH-5-3161 Barberton, Ohio The Grasshopper and the Twig TO the bulging eyes of the grasshopper it was just a spray of green young twigs, full of sap and spring. The next instant one of the twigs lunged forward. The ’hopper was clamped in a pair of vise-like arms. The Praying Mantis, twig-shaped hunter of the insect world, began to dine. Natural camouflage is not restricted to insects. Human twigs”, too, disguise their deadliness. Communists look and act and talk just like other people. If we as individuals cannot penetrate the Com- munists’ disguise, how can we possibly combat them? The answer is so simple it is widely ignored. We can keep them out of positions of trust, where they can really harm us—simply by being i?i those positions of trust ourselves. It means that many more of us must make the same kind of extra effort the Communists will- ingly make. It means ordinary citizens getting into active politics, joining civic organizations, doing the jobs the Communists would like to do. It means work, no two ways about it. But if true Americans don’t do it, Communists gladly will. And it’s work by which we could provide a powerful defense against our perfectly-disguised enemies, the Communists.
