He was fond of reciting it and applying it to his daily life. I can still hear him to this day when he said, Tell me not, in mournful numbers Life is but an empty dream For the soul is dead that slumbers, And things are not what they seem. Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal; Dust thou art, to dust returnest, Was not spoken of the soul. Art is long, and Time is fleeting, And our hearts, though stout and brave, Still, like muffled drums, are beat- ing Funeral Marches to the grave. Board Of Education Trust no Future, however pleas- ant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act, act in the living present! Heart within, and God O’erhead! Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time. Let us, then, be up and doing. With a heart for any fate, Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labour and to wait. This old man founded his life on his education. I hope that you will have found something as good at Northwest Georgia to base you life on. Jerry E. Bryan Principal Seated: Mrs. Evelyn Durham, Mrs. Anne Ridge. The Triple A schedule against larger schools proved to be a chal- lenge we couldn’t meet. Dedication, long hours of prac- tice and hard work weren’t enough for the injury pla- gued Wolverines although they never stopped trying. It was the final season for our graduating seniors: Doug Norwood, Chuck Robinson, Flake Belk, Quinton Rum- ley, Bill Thompson, Mutt Massengale, Gerald Sims, Ken- ny Palmer, Steve McFarland, and Tim Atchley. 59 60 ? - vX ft? Wolverines ’79-’80 Under the direction of second- year head-coach Bill Bigham, the men’s basketball program showed considerable progress. The score didn’t always go the way we want- ed, but we were not disappointed with the hustling style of basketball we knew we would see every game. 62 Left to Right: Front: Scott Stallings, Lamar Guffey, Jeff Duke, Jimmy Lawson, Chris Stallings. They displayed the pride and confidence that has come to be expected from a NWG Wolverine. In the Ooltewah Tournament, Bill Thompson and Jimmy Plumlee placed second in their division. In the Rockmart Tournament, David Trantham placed fourth and went on to wrestle for NWG in the State Tournament at LaGrange. Dedication Dear Mrs. Duncan, You are sooo purty, and we admire you sooo much. Goodness! What would we do without you? We couldn’t rite half way decent. We couldn’t spell them hard words. We couldn’t read and understand the Sentinel. And your topaz ring is real nice. We always have liked your dress, too. You love us and it shows. You care about teaching, making us care about learning. Your classes, conducted with exuberance and intelligence, have provided a framework upon which we can structure productive lives. In appreciation, we dedicate this 1980 edition of the Wolverine to you Joan Duncan. Mr. Stahl has roamed the nation in dogged search of the elusive wolverine. His efforts were rewarded this past year with the rare photographs of our mascot found in the opening sec- tion of the book. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Longshore opened their beauti- ful home in Valley Head, Alabama to the staff. Our Senior Superlatives were photographed there. Mrs. Myrna McMahan and Mr. John Wilcox and the staff of the Dade County Sentinel provided their usual fine coverage of school events and furnished us with photographs. Mr. Jerry Bryan, our principal, is always a very present help. Without his understanding, this book would not have been possible.
