NORTHWEST GEORGIA HIGH SCHOOL Trenton, Georgia The 1979 WOLVERINE In our fourth year, Northwest Georgia completed her first cycle. The Freshmen of the year of consolidation were Seniors. The decade of the Seventies had taken us from separate schools in divergent parts of the county, through the turmoil of change, to the reality of Northwest Georgia High School. 3 t 10 12 15 ADMINISTRA TION From The Principal's Pen Every school year has its high and low points. This has been a good year as far as I’m concerned. Sure, we’ve had some problems; but with combined effort and understanding we manage to weather the storms. 1 feel that Northwest Georgia has an outstanding student body. For the most part you have achieved the goals of education and managed to have a little fun on the side. 1 hope that this year at Northwest Georgia has been a good one for each of you and that each day has brought you closer to attaining a meaningful place in the world. The world can be yours — if you will only make the effort to achieve it. Sincerely, Jerry E. Bryan 18 Staff And Administration Mr. Frank Starkey. Vice Principal B.S. Perhaps never in the history of Dade County, has so awesome a group of talent gathered on one team. Led by the pinpoint pitching and uncanny hitting of Coach Lee Ross, the NWG Senior Wolves tamed an upstart B team to the score of 11 to 7. Mr. Randall Mills wielded a booming bat, hitting towering shots to deep left field resulting in a succession of singles. Coach Dirt Brown despite an old war injury and chronic alibi, managed to stretch several sure triples into doubles. Coach Starkey and Coach Beard were also standouts at the plate and on the field. The Wolverine offense was led by Junior halfback Quinton Rumley who rushed for 236 yards scoring three touchdowns along the way. Richard Moore, Tim Atchley, and Rumley led the defensive unit. Richard Moore booted three P.A.T.’S Northwest Georgia vs Gordon Lee 0-21 On September 8th, the Wolves traveled to Gordon Lee at Chickamauga to continue an old rivalry. Despite a valiant effort, we fell short 21-0. Quinton Rumley and David Webb were the leading ball carriers. Tony Gossett with nine tackles and Ray Bodenhamer with seven led the defensive unit. Northwest Georgia vs Southeast Whitfield 7-37 Northwest Georgia suffered the first home loss of the season to the Raiders of Southeast Whitfield by a score of 37-7. Rumley and fullback Ralph Ryan rushed for 65 and 28 yards respectively Noseman Charlie Foshee had two quarterback sacks. Kicker Moore added the P.A.T. Northwest Georgia vs Fannin County 16-7 The Wolverines bounced back the night of September 22nd with a much — needed win over the Fannin County Rebels. The final score was 16-7. Rumley again led the rushing with 20 carries for 104 yards. Tight end, Tim Atchley, totaled 47 yards in pass receptions. The highlight of a strong defensive game involved a forced punt by the Rebels in their own end zone which, due to a high snap, resulted in a 2 point safety for the Wolves. Center Tick Webb scored a crowd-pleasing touchdown when he scooped up Rumley’s fumble and ran it into the end zone. David Webb scored the second touchdown. Richard Moore added two P.A.T.’S. Northwest Georgia vs Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 0-19 “Homecoming” . . . 1978. Northwest Georgia was defeated by the Lakeview-Fort Oglethrope Warriors after a tough game. The Wolves depended on their passing game with Allen Tinker accounting for 37 yards in receptions, Tim Atchley with 11 yards, and Mark Steele with 9 yards. Steve McFarland quarterbacked the game. The defensive effort was led by Chuck Robinson and Wally Moore who each recovered fumbles. Northwest Georgia vs North Sand Mountain 36-7 On a cold night on Sand Mountain, Northwest Georgia came up with a big win over the Bi ons scoring five touchdowns and winning 36-7. Ray Bodenhamer scored two touchdowns with 170 total yards for the game. David Webb also went over the 100 ards rushing mark with 114 yards and one touchdown. Tony Gossett, Lynn Battles, and Charles Foshee were standouts on the new Split Four defense. Richard Moore kicked for four P.A.T.’s und threw the ball for a two point conversion The win was dimmed by the loss of Northwest’s leading ground gainer, Quinton Rumley. An elbow injury put him out for the season. Northwest Georgia vs Murray County 7-25 Northwest Georgia could not get on track in this game until the second half. But too little too late was the case. The Wolve’s passing attack had to carry the load relying on Tim Atchley, Allen Tinker, and Ray Bodenhamer. Tim Atchley scored the lone touchdown. The defense was led by Tony Gossett and Chuck Robinson. Richard Moore added the P.A.T. Northwest Georgia vs Northwest Whitfield 3-14 The Wolverines played a challenging game with the number one team in the sub-region, the hosting Northwest Whitfield Bruins. The score obscured the closeness of the contest. David Webb, Ralph Ryan, and Mutt Massengale were leding rushers with 72 yards for Webb, 40 for Ryan, and 39 for Massengale. Richard Moore scored the only points for Northwest Georgia on a 26 yard field goal. Northwest Georgia vs South Pittsburg 12-35 Northwest Georgia hosted last year’s second place team in Tennessee, the South Pittsburg Pirates. Facing the unfamiliar Single Wing, the Wolves had difficulty on defense. Allen Tinker, David Webb, and Mutt Massengale were offensive leaders. Tinker produced the only points for the Wolverines on two touchdown passes from quarterback Steve McFarland. Northwest Georgia vs Chattanooga Valley 12-0 The Wolverines defeated the Chattanooga Valley Eagles by a score of 12-0 in the final game of the season. Mutt Massengale with 117 yards and David Webb with 77 led the Wolves on offense. Allen Tinker scored the final touchdown of the season on a pass from Steve McFarland. Richard Moore kicked a field goal. Tim Atchley led the defense with a safety on the Chattannooga Valley quarterback. Northwest’s defense allowed only 87 yard total offense for the Eagles. This game marked the end of the playing careers of the following seniors: Tony Gossett, Allen Tinker, Ray Bodenhamer, Tick Webb, David Webb, Lynn Battles, Mark Steele. Charlie Foshee, Richard Moore, Ralph Ryan, and Sam Hicks. 86 First Row: Tim “Gladiator” Elmore, “Laughing” Larry Bishop, David McFarland, Billy “Red’ Jones. Ray Thumper Bodenhamcr, Steve “Bubba” McFarland, Tony Gossett, Tony “Fantastic” Massey, Pat “Peachtree” Carroll, Mark Woosley, Tony “Harvey” Smith, Tim “Bush” Atchley. This year’s basketball season was a difficult one. The players were always ready to play and gave their best every time they hit the court; but playing a full Triple A schedule was tough. Under the leadership of first year coaches Bill Bigham and Gerald Beard, the team showed promise for the future. 89 Wolverettes Basketball 1978-79 The ’78-’79 basketball season was a learning exper- ience for the Wolverettes who improved as the season went on. Since there wasn’t a senior on the team, they will be back next year with experience and knowledge of the game working for them. •Juupfnfii I First Row: Kathy Palmer, Candy Stoner, Kim Reeves, Kim Blansit. Dedication Each year the Wolverine staff dedicates the yearbook to a very special member of the Northwest Georgia school community. Our choice this year is also a very special member of the world community. Mr. Jody Norris is a born enthusiast, who, taking life at high tide, refuses to be daunted by conventional normality. Norris’ world is populated by an indignant duck who irreverently interrupts even the most seri- ous art lesson; a black cat who patiently laces up his four little Adidases and goes jogging; an invisible dog who has hitch-hiked to California and back; a cape-swirling vampire who stalks the good citizens of Soddy-Daisy; a guitar pick- er who favors us with original ballads about our double-knit society; and an artist whose works achingly capture the eyes of age. We, his students and friends, are also part of his world. Mr. Norris has opened our eyes to the splendor of art and to the importance of the artist. Our talents have been shaped and bur- nished through his efforts. Mr. Norris has given us our own private world of beauty, and we will never forget him. 139 AD VER TISEMENTS Compliments of BENGAL YARN Trenton, Georgia COCA-COLA BOTTLING Compliments of TRENTON SPINNING MILL DIVISION E B CARPET MILLS, INC. This photograph was used for our Division pages and will be reprinted by our school in many ways in the future. Mrs. Shirley McGee of Bryant, Alabama, who graciously allowed us to photograph our Senior Superlatives in her lovely home. Mrs. Myrna McMahan and Mr. John Wil- cox and the staff of the Dade County Sen- tinel for covering events in our school and for allowing us to select much needed pho- tographs from their files. Ms. Liz Brannum, who furnished the staff with many fine photographs. David Webb, who designed our end sheets. Roger Baker, Northwest Georgia News photographer, who shared his photographs and negatives with us. Jim White, assistant to Wolverine photog- rapher, Mark Woosley, who provided aid, transportation, and good fellowship on many photo assignments. Mr. Jerry Bryan, who supported us all year in our picture sessions, our advertis- ing sales, and our rush against deadlines. r . . - V •; .. 'Vv' : • . •’ -f: •r. • •• - .. • •: • . v' J c - .
