The subiect is essential in all types of engineering practice. The drafting board is often the gateway into industry. An engineer without a working knowledge of the engi- neer's language would be professionally illiterate. The average driver views his automobile as an inven- tion designed for his convenience. But boys studying auto mechanics see it as a triumph of engineering and mechanical skill, contrived of hundreds of parts as- sembled into a smoothly functioning unit. Students taking auto mechanics learn the names of each part, how and where each fits and the job each part per- forms. Woodworking coordinates manipulations of the hands and brain. Wood has played an important part in the development of mankind. NVood enters directly, or in- directly, into the construction of more manufactured articles than any other one material. Students work on individual projects which are placed on exhibit in the department once a year. Drivers Education is a one semester course. Students are taught the rules of safe driving. Principles of op- erating a car, down to changing a tire are studied. A special dual control car is used for instruction. Classes are arranged so that a student goes to class once a week and drives once a week. The class is reserved for students who are at least fifteen and a half years old. 1161
