Finding your right class, getting your right books, locating your locker, and acting the right way are ail obstacles to be overcome in order for Freshmen to establish their identity. This year ' s Freshmen overcame these barriers nicely and indeed established themselves, contributing well to life at Northwest. Their spirit and enthusiasm for school were evidenced early, as they became the class to win the magazine drive and had the top sales leader. Frosh, you were okay. CLASS OFFICERS: Dan Tyler. President; Meg Martin, Vice Pres- ident; Ellen Daly. Sec- retary; Patricia Curls, Treasurer. Sophomores Seek Identity The search for an established identity is the major challenge of the sophonrjore year. Sopho- mores seem to flounder frequently in the wake of upperclassmen. Yet, they try desperately to shake the new kid image of being freshmen. Sophomores do contribute, though. Their vitality is shown in sports, student council, clubs, and the semi-formal. Somehow, they do establish themselves and survive quite well. Juniors took on added responsibili- ties, as they made a great transition from soph- omore to junior year. More leadership roles were opened, college was no longer just a part of the future, but a reality. The juniors started off their year with many challenges. They did not fair very well in the magazine drive, but their junior ring Mass and dance were a success. They immediately delved into planning for a very special event for their class, the Junior Prom, which they handled nicely. 19 Where Did the Time Go? This year ' s seniors have had a fast paced year. We were reminded at the beginning of September to begin our college plans and to fill out our applications. Many of us retook our SAT ' s in November and the Achievement Tests in December. Our newly elected class officers started right in on the planning of our Senior Hal- loween Party. This event brought us together for an evening of creativity and enjoyment for all. Being measured for caps and gowns took many of us by surprise at how fast graduation was coming. With the help of our ingenious class advisors, we started early in planning the highlight of our last year, the Senior Prom. Spring was colored with congratulations as we received our acceptances and saw our future plans coming together at last. Together we attended the various dances during the year and united to cheer our athletic teams on to successful sea- sons. Who could forget frequenting Papa Gino ' s after home basketball games, swap- ping graduation pictures, and smiles well needed during exam week? All these events were the ingredients that made up a most challenging but enjoyable senior year. 20 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Secretary: Tom Hampton President: Pat Flaherty Treasurer: Noreen Wise Vice President: Joni Janiszewski 21 22 r 23 Hl l L 1 24 n WW 99 Br Via Kv fl lS Hl F w ' d l LA I F HHIJ!inH!da H vr Sean Hurley is an excellent swimmer. He started swim- ming over eleven years ago, when he was only seven. Presently, he is on both the Bloomfield and Capital Region Aquatic Clubs. For the last four years Sean has been among the top five swimmers in the state under the freestyle and backstroke divisions. In 1979 he was cho- sen as a member of the freestyle All Star Team. Last summer Sean went to the Richmond, Virginia meet, where he placed first in the one hundred meter backstroke. This honor is just one of the many others he has earned in previous tournaments. What does it take to become this good? Sean must train a minimum of two hours daily, ten months out of the year. He intends to use this experience in college where he plans to swim competitively. Since the age of three, Vida has danced with a Lithuanian folk dancing group called the Berzelis. This group dances at activities mainly in and around the Hartford area. The Mayor ' s All American Festival, the Civics and Arts Festi- val, church organizations, and various convalescent homes are just a few places where her group dances. The biggest event they attend is a Lithuanian folk dance festival which is held every five years in Chicago. Thou- sands of Lithuanians flock to Chicago and attend this fes- tival. Vida also attended the Lithuanian Youth Congress of the World. She recently toured Europe with this group. The Youth Congress includes young Lithuanians from all over the world. The main purpose of this organization is to keep Lithuanian youth aware of the problems of Lithuania both in the past and present, and to motivate them to work together for Lithuanian freedom. The Euro- pean trip also enabled these youth to meet other Lithua- nians in order to share all they have in common. It turned out to be a pleasurable as well as an educational experi- ence. Honor Roll Senior Meg Andrews leads a very interesting life out- side of Northwest. She has been a member of the Hart- ford Chapter of the 4-H Club for eight years. In 1979, she was the state winner for her main project, which was pub- lic speaking. This accomplishment allowed her to attend the 1979 National 4-H Congress, Expanding Horizons, in November. The one or two winners from each project in each state met in Chicago for one week to share their plans and ideas. While in Chicago, there were group meetings, presentations, audiences with celebrities, and time for sight seeing. Meg is also interested in drama. During the summer of 1979, her summer job consisted of working for the Hart- ford Stage Company in Hartford, Connecticut. She audi- tioned for a part in the play Two Gentlemen of Verona, by Shakespeare, and was awarded a job in the vocal cho- rus. During the months of July and August Meg worked for twenty-five hours a week, which she was paid for her talents She found this work very enjoyable and a great way to be employed during the summer. Along with those other accomplishments, Meg enjoys working on campaigns. Since her family is involved in politics, she often finds herself making phone calls and handing out pamphlets at the polls on election day. 39 ' tamwraamttmumwm Tracye Johnson Bunny, If you have a dream pursue it until it becomes a real- ity. Sandy is a person who constantly works to capacity at everything she does. She holds a very prestigious posi- tion as president of the National Honor Society. Sandy won the Outstanding Negro Student Award for her exceptional performance on her S.A.T ' s. Sandy is not gifted with just brains however, as her classmates elected her Queen of the Junior Prom. Other exploits of Sandy involve her in a tutoring program for Hartford youths, an active member of Girl ' s Leader Club, a co- chairperson of the Student Assistant Committee and the co-editor-in-chief of the yearbook. Sandy certainly has made her four years at Northwest beneficial to herself and to her fellow students. 43 Everyone is talking about Norman Bailey! This 6 ft. 5 inch star will definitely leave his imprint on Northwest basketball. Norman started on the varsity team as a fresh- man and has won the M.V.P. award every year since then. Norman has played in H.C.C. tournaments, the state championship, and has also been elected for the all-state second and first teams in his sophomore and junior years, respectively. In the summer of ' 79 he received a special honor when he was selected to attend the Pitts- burg Five Star Basketball Camp. Senior year, as Captain of the team, he continued to display his extraordinary tal- ents. Colleges showed a special interest in Norman, and he was Connecticut ' s most recruited player. The diverse personality of Norman Bailey was reflected in his basket- ball playing. Norman showed his gratitude, generosity, and ability to work well as part of a team. Norman plans to continue playing basketball in college and possibly play- ing in the pros. However, if the pro ' s do not come his way, Norman feels his education is strong enough to rely on. Her reasons for staying were because she became attached to certain people and she found the entire experience very rewarding. Hav- ing a definite interest in nursing, she continued this same type of work throughout most of the summer. Carolyn found the same feeling of satisfaction senior year while tutoring youngsters as an active member of the tutoring system. Carolyn has a special knack for getting along well with all people. She is a member of the Social Actions Committee, and organized the entire clothing and toy drive. Along with these other contributions, she has a part-time job and even finds time to volunteer in the Emergency Room at Mount Sinai Hospital once a week. The changes from a small, private, all-girl high school to a larger, parochial, coed high school must have been insurmountable. But Jean Seroke, Mary Ellen Sullo, Elise Dalton, Tracy Pennington, Brenda Markarian, Penny Forbes, Youngmi Kim, and Ellen Dalton readily adapted. They had to get accustomed to being around a louder environment and more crowded hallways. They found one of the biggest changes to be the much larger size of the classrooms. This honor was bestowed on them after their PSAT scores were reviewed because they both placed in the top one-half percentile in Con- necticut. The next step for them was to apply as finalists. The top one-third of the semi-finalists sent their aca- demic grades, PSAT and Scholastic Aptitude Test scores, along with transcripts, to be reviewed. The tran- scripts consist of a form letter much like a college appli- cation, relating their overall interests. Both girls wrote an essay describing themselves and what activities they are occupied with in their free time. These requirements, along with their individual counselor ' s recommendations, were sent in to the judging center along with the fifteen hundred other National Semi-finalists ' applications. The benefits of being a semi-finalist include being eligible for scholarships to the college of their choice and tuition free college education. Dorry now boards a grade horse, two quarter horses, and a mule on her grandfather ' s farm. Dorry has won trophies in the west- ern saddle division in the 4-H shows around Connecticut. Lynn has been riding saddle seat for eight years in 4-H shows, where she is Vice President of her club, and American Horse Shows, which are nationally accredited. MOST PERSONABLE: Jeannine Salone and Ken Woods 53 Colleen Brewer has been one of the most prominent woman competitors of Northwest Catholic. On the court or on the track, she consistently displays an energetic style of competition. Colleen has not been associated with losing teams. Sophomore year was her first year of varsity competition. That team took the Hartford County Conference champi- onship in 1978. As a starting forward junior year, Colleen contributed to a 17-3 season. However, a leg injury put her out for a good part of the season. Colleen ' s vigor and personality won her the respect of her teammates as they voted her co-captain of her senior year team. Once again they were H.C.C. contenders. Colleen also competes in outdoor track where her suc- cess continues. She throws the javelin, but her main events are running. She runs in the one hundred meter, the hurdles, and the four by one ten relay. Her excep- tional all around athletic ability won her the Most Valuable Player in track her sophomore year. Her injury in basket- ball prevented her from retaining the distinguished honor in her junior year. However, Colleen competed 1 00% sen- ior year. Scholastically, Colleen maintained a steady B average. In school she was involved in the Social Actions Club and the Girls ' Leaders Club. Colleen ' s outstanding athletic achievements and per- sonable characteristics have earned her the admiration of her fellow students. Main St. — West Hartford Phone: 236 2361 1 ■ DRINK 1 DRINK 1 133 We can ' t be contented with yesterday ' s glory, We can ' t live on promises winter to spring, Today is the moment and now is our story, We ' ll laugh, and we ' ll cry, and we ' ll sing. 134 When the time of our particular sunset comes, Our thing, our accomplishment, won ' t really matter a great deal. But the clarity and care with which we have loved others, Will speak with vitality; for the great gift of love we have been for each other. 135 Be The Best Of Whatever You Are If you can ' t be a pine on the top of the hill, Be a scrub in the valley — but be The best little scrub by the side of the rill; Be a bush if you can ' t be a tree. If you can ' t be a bush be a bit of the grass, And some highway happier make; If you can ' t be a muskle then just be a bass But the liveliest bass in the lake! We can ' t all be captains, we ' ve got to be crew, There ' s something for all of us here, There ' s big work to do, and there ' s lesser to do, And the task you must do is the near. If you can ' t be a highway then just be a trail, If you can ' t be the sun be a star; It isn ' t by size that you win or you fail — Be the best of whatever you are! Douglas Malloch k 136 !fe. ' i
