.311 TRGJAN CROS9 Both the men's and vvomen's Cross Country teams had excellent seasons this year. Under the guidance of Coach David Nlills, both teams compiled winning records, A new course was mapped out on the schooI's campus this summer, so the teams finally had a home- course advantage. With the help of faculty members, Northwest hosted seven home meets. Captains of the teams were Jeff Drye, Bryan Dill, .Julie lvlurr, and Becky l-lunter. The teams worked very hard the whole sea- son with peak training of fifty miles per vveek. Coach lVlills used training techniques such as .wif asf, , L' -43,-4' running stadium steps, sprint drills, LSD Uong slow distancel, and hillrunning to get his runners in top form. The teams were led by Bryan Dill, the overall winner of five meets, and Becky l-lunter, overall Winner of eight meets. All-Conference runners were Crystal Spears, Becky Hunter, .Julie lVlurr, and Bryan Dill, Bryan Dill, Becky l-lunter, and Julie lVlurr qualified for the State lvleet. TRGJA 4 .John I.ee Ferriss passes the ball as James Caudill and Paul Bagley closely keep their eyes on Petranick Make All-Conference This year's soccer team began with hot practices twice a day, confusion with coaches, and only eight return- ing starters from last year. Through all of this. their high spirit never dropped but soared more and more as the season progressed. The season started out wonderfully with a 2-'I victory over Nlooresville. They won the first two conference games before they were defeated in a well-played game with Concord. This young team with only six seniors was able to fight for a confer- ence record of 'l 'l-S. They finished the year with a B-CJ non-conference victory over Kannapolis. Their overall record was 'l Z3-5. Senior Co-Captain Chris Emerson broke a new school record for the most goals scored in a season. l-le scored twenty-eight goals this year, and he ended the year with a total of fifty-seven career goals. Other high scorers included sophomore Paul Beg- ley with a total of twenty and senior Co-captain Petranick with 'I 'l goals. Steve Petranick and Chris Emer- son were named for the All- Conference team. Chris Emerson was also named runner-up for the Player of the Year Award. All Confer- ence l-lonorable Nlentions go to sophomore Paul Begley and junior first year goalie Daniel Goodson. Our Northwest Junior Varsity soc- cer team finished their season with a E-El-'l team record. They defeated Sun Valley and Albemarle. Cur senior exchange student. Franciso Farriera, was high scorer for the year with four goals. The team ended the year with high hopes for a stronger county-wide ju- nior varsity program and a winning season for next year.
