ff What is a lVlat hAate?H The often asked question What is a Nlat lVlate'?, pops into peoples heads when a mat mate is mentioned. Con- trary to popular belief a mat mate is not a cheerleader or a manager, but somewhere in between. The duties consist of making name tags to wear the day of the match and posters to hang during the match, setting up the Northwest gym, intro- ducing home and visiting wrestlers before the match, keeping official scorebooks, color charts, working clock and flipcards for audience dur- ing the match, and giving out towels and drinks after each wrestIer's match. The mat mate team consists of eight girls, three-year members are Robin Flussell, Karen Wesslerg two-year members are Lesley Creamer, Leslie Stafford: first year members are .Jeanna lVlcCIannon, Cindy Faulkenbery, .Julie Faulkenbery, Susan Walker, and the advisors are Nlrs. 'I 7C X Sports Young and aggressive best describes the 'ISS7-SS Northwest Cabarrus Wrestling team, said Coach Steele, Head Coach Randy Steele and Asst. Coach IVlike Burris put in long hours with the Northwest Wrestlers and are proud of the successful outcome of their first year with the team, Opening the 'S7-SS season by three decisive consecutive wins at the annual Cabarrus County Quad Nleet, the Northwest grapplers proved themselves to be a committed team. The overall dual team record improved from 'l El-'l -'I of the previous year to S-7. The Trojan wrestlers performed well in tournaments as well as dual matches. The JV wrest- lers won a second place team trophy at the South Rowan tournament with Varsity finish- ing third. The Varsity also finished second place at the South Mecklenburg Holiday Invitational Tournament, third place at the SRC Tourna- ment and came in sixth at the 'I SSS Regionals. Co-captains this year were senior Silly Rhine- hardt, and junior Ronnie Nleyer. Other varsity standouts were juniors Tarrence Jones, David l-larrison, Scott l-lar-tsell, Kenny Tucker, and freshman Chad Cauble. The 'l SS7-SS All Con- ference wresters were Billy Rhinehardt, Ronnie lvleyer, and Chong Rark. State Qualifiers were Silly Rhinehardt, Ronnie lvleyer. Tarrence Jones, and Chad Cauble.
