The Northwest golf team did very well this year with only three golfers returning. Nlatt Trexler and Steve Thigpen, seniors, end junior lVlike Duncan returned bringing two years of experience. The golf season started in February with practice and lasted until the end of lVlay. Practices were after school at the Cabarrus Country Club. Coach Bob Angley taught the golfers well. Coach Angley. with twelve years of experience, showed the golfers that they could do well. The average team score was around SED, and four golfers were within 'l S strokes of each other in yearly totals. They were lVlike Duncan, lVlatt Trex- '5 .-' - . X , ,M ,, 7'- . 'I ESS X Sports if yu A. ler, Steve Thigpen, and Nick Nelson. lvlike Duncan was dynamic this year having the best scores of the season and playing number one all year. The golfers also did very well in the Conference Tournament. The team won their match with most of the players shooting in the SD's. The team, although they tried hard, just could not beat Sun Valley. Northwest finished second in the Conference. Northwest also had an All- Conference player, Nick Nelson. l-le was chosen All-Conference by being one of the golfers whose scores were the best in the Conference Tourna- ment. .-X lzx K TR0,1AN VARSIT Trojans Time To Score! Northwest Cabarrus Varsity earned an honorable reputation this year with a winning season of S-13. All their hard work and determination paid off when Coach Soupy Campbell, in only his second year as head coach at Northwest, led the Trojans to their first state play-off since 1979. The season came down to the line with Lincolnton and, although the game did not end in a victory for Northwest, their loss was only S-7. Eric White, having S-S field goals and 'I 'l -'l I3 extra points, was selected along with Willie Knox, .John Clancy, Ronnie Blackwell, and Steve Cannon for All-Conference. It is not surprising that Willie Knox was chosen with SC tackles, SSS yards rushing, 41 touchdowns, and 5 Steve Cannon swiftly receives the ball from Eric Tucker to help in the defeat of the lvloores- ville Blue Devils. 'l 58 X Sports quarterback sacks. Flonnie Blackwell was equally unsurprising with 5 quar- terback sacks and S5 tackles. Four Trojans earned l-lonorable Nlention: lvlike Saucom, lvlark In- gram, Eric Tucker, and Anthony Carrington. Among these, Eric Tucker had an outstanding 4SS yards rushing, 4 touchdowns, 'l of which was 'ISS yards, and 'l S-40 yards passing. Nlark Ingram, another remarkable player, awed the fans with S in- terceptions. Dedication and effort were key factors for success during the 'I S87 season.
