O Softball is a sport that cannot be taken softly. Being a good softball player requires girls with individual commitment, a good team attitude, the willingness to give up other things to come to practice, and determina- tion to do one's part for the team. The 'l SB7 year was the best one yet. The starting line-up was back from the previous year and everyone played much better as a team, said Coach Karriker. Kelly Finley agreed that the team wasa more experienced: and although it was a tougher year, they came through very well. Cn Awards Day, Beverly Shane re- ceived the Coach's Award, Natalie Troutman and .Jennifer lvlotley, Nlost Improved, and Leanne Beckmann IVIVP CIVlost Valuable Player Awardl. p .V Mg if swat V, T ROJ AN Leanne Beckmann and Jennifer lvlot- ley were All Conference and Lou l-lunter was the Northwest Female Scholar Athlete. Coach Karriker was named Coach of the Year for the SPC. Although sports are tough and take a lot of time, there are fun times, too. Cne moment occurred when lvlindy Hughes hit a line drive at Coach Karriker and she had to do a high- jump-split to avoid a trip to the emer- gency room! Over all, the students who take time to be the best they can be in their sport never regret the hard work it takes to get there. The Northwest golf team did very well this year with only three golfers returning. Nlatt Trexler and Steve Thigpen, seniors, end junior lVlike Duncan returned bringing two years of experience. The golf season started in February with practice and lasted until the end of lVlay. Practices were after school at the Cabarrus Country Club. Coach Bob Angley taught the golfers well. Coach Angley. with twelve years of experience, showed the golfers that they could do well. The average team score was around SED, and four golfers were within 'l S strokes of each other in yearly totals. They were lVlike Duncan, lVlatt Trex- '5 .-' - . X , ,M ,, 7'- . 'I ESS X Sports if yu A. ler, Steve Thigpen, and Nick Nelson. lvlike Duncan was dynamic this year having the best scores of the season and playing number one all year. The golfers also did very well in the Conference Tournament. The team won their match with most of the players shooting in the SD's. The team, although they tried hard, just could not beat Sun Valley. Northwest finished second in the Conference. Northwest also had an All- Conference player, Nick Nelson. l-le was chosen All-Conference by being one of the golfers whose scores were the best in the Conference Tourna- ment.
