LADY TROJANS - SPC CHAMPS Beginning in early August and end- ing in November, the Lady Trojans worked hard for their first SPC Championship. With the loss of four of last season's top six seeds, inexpe- rience was a major concern. The first match proved that early practice was a good idea. Defeating Forest Hills with an S-'I victory gave the team hope for the season. AI- though they lost the second game, they were still in good spirits. Prac- tice continued with vvins over East Flowan, West Flowan, and Forest Hills. When they finally made it to the SPC Tournament, they were ready to cap- ture their first SPC Championship. O Softball is a sport that cannot be taken softly. Being a good softball player requires girls with individual commitment, a good team attitude, the willingness to give up other things to come to practice, and determina- tion to do one's part for the team. The 'l SB7 year was the best one yet. The starting line-up was back from the previous year and everyone played much better as a team, said Coach Karriker. Kelly Finley agreed that the team wasa more experienced: and although it was a tougher year, they came through very well. Cn Awards Day, Beverly Shane re- ceived the Coach's Award, Natalie Troutman and .Jennifer lvlotley, Nlost Improved, and Leanne Beckmann IVIVP CIVlost Valuable Player Awardl. p .V Mg if swat V, T ROJ AN Leanne Beckmann and Jennifer lvlot- ley were All Conference and Lou l-lunter was the Northwest Female Scholar Athlete. Coach Karriker was named Coach of the Year for the SPC. Although sports are tough and take a lot of time, there are fun times, too. Cne moment occurred when lvlindy Hughes hit a line drive at Coach Karriker and she had to do a high- jump-split to avoid a trip to the emer- gency room! Over all, the students who take time to be the best they can be in their sport never regret the hard work it takes to get there.
