Language originally signified only the expression of thoucght by spoken words, it has now acquire the broader interpre- tation of the expression of thought by any means. Eng ish classes focus on the study of the meaning, capacity, and power of the English language. Each class studies a different means of the ex- pression of thou ht. In ninth rage, the famous play Romeo and uliet is studied as well as grammar. Tenth grade opens yet an- other interpretation of our language with m thology. Such novels as T e Scarlet lljetter, Billy Budd, and Of Mice and Men are read and carefully scruti- nized by the junior classes. Literature is not the only area of concentration, how- ever, creative writing is also explored. Seniors go on to read Hard Times, Wuthering Heights, Macbeth, and Beowulf, and also write term papers. Progressing through high schoo brings increasingly difficult courses and, now and then, a teacher who insists on push- ing- students hard. he firm teachers' goal is to drive students to be the best that they can be. Mrs. Byers, for example, stated, I really enjoy teaching. Counseling is more than the know edge of how to make the erfect schedule and getting students of to college. As Mr. ose puts it, You must care and have the desire to see others reach their oten- tial. You must care enough to be a fiiend, yet be firm enougih to criticize. . Mr. Rose atten ed Indiana University and received a B.S. de ree in Physical Education, then movedgon to Clemson University for a master's degree in Guid- ance and Counseling. He is not finished yet. He will begin to work towards a doctoral de ree at U.N.C.C. also. Being athgletic as well as academically successful, Mr. Rose played colle e foot- ball for three years and followingiis sec- ond knee sur ery, he became a student assistant coaci. After college he contin- ued assistant coaching at several univer- sities in the states. As a result of Mr. Rose's athletic ac- tiveness, he continued to travel as he had when he was younger due to his father's career. Thanks to Dad he has had the opportunity to sample life in six different states. Most of us know Mr. Rose as a rather serious guy, but he is also a big practical joker w o loves to make people laugh.
