Innocents Abroad Two Northwest students were fortunate enough to be able to widen their travel experiences in Europe and South America this past summer. Gigi Gulledge, a member of international Fellowship, inc., lived with a family of seven in Caracas, Venezuela, during July and August. Gigi said that her biggest dif- ficulty was in communicating since she knew no Spanish, and they, very little English. Another problem was that no previous Northwest student had ever been an exchangee and Gigi had no idea of what was expected of her. Highlighting her trip were visits to bullfights, serving as maid of honor in a real Spanish wedding, and a celebrity guest appearance on a local rock musical T.V. program. Gigi took a little of Northwest with her to Caracas, as she was the very first person to roll a Venezuelan yard. Commenting on her trip, Gigi said that it was an unforget- table experience, but she was glad to get home in time for the first football game this fall. Beth Miller, the lone Northwest representative, ac- companied a group from Concord Senior High to France in June and July. Beth, a typical tourist, got lost on the Paris subway and was rescued by a nice French gentleman who was selling flowers. Among her fondest memories was the French rock concert in Nice, where she stayed in the former palace of a Russian czar. Beth's most daring escapade was a skylift ride to the top of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the French Alps. Asked about her favorite place, Beth replied that she fell in love with the French Riviera, but was scared to death at Saint-Malo, a real ghost town. Though Beth enjoyed her trip, she emphasized that America was truly beautiful. 1
