TT Students Take Stand Against Substance Abuse Substance abuse is a continually grow- ing concern, not only among parents and teachers, but also among the students of NHS. In order to face this dilemma, Northville ' s programs include two organizations dedicated to controlling the abuse o drugs and alcohol. SADD, Students Against Drunk Driving, returned after its successful introduction last year by assistant principal William Hamilton. SADD ' s current staff boasts Mark Dozier and Beth Buckland as co- presidents, Roxanne Serkaian as vice- president, Anne Griffith as secretary, and Shawnemarie Pickarski as head of publicity. Thanks to the Northville Action Council, Bill Essex, a veteran of the In- diana State Police, was able to come in and talk to students about drug and alcohol abuse. New to the school this year was BABES, Beginning Alcohol and Addictions Basic Education Studies, designed to help pro- tect children and young adults from the temptations of substance abuse. The pro- gram consists of seven units, including stories, songs, puppet presentations, and group discussions. Jane Lauber, NHS ' s psychology teacher, is a certified BABES ' s presenter and has organized groups of students that visit local elementary schools, educating young children about substance abuse. The efforts of these two organizations have helped the students of Northville High to more fully realize the hazards of drug and alcohol abuse.
