Spirit Surges at NHS Participation among NHS students soared to a peak during Spirit Week 1987, organized by the Student Congress. Students from all classes, and even some teachers, dressed in their favorite garb for traditional pajama day, beach day, and orange and black day. Popular new opposite-sex day and costume party day tested students ' creativity and promoted originality. Lunch activities, including Jello toss, Vernor ' s guzzling, toilet papering, and dress-your-partner, required agile mouths and strong stomachs, as well as quickness and coordination. Class competition night involved even more students in leap frog, piggy back, and wheelbarrow races. Once again, classes competed in musical chairs and tug-o -war. The night also featured two new messy events: coke tossing and spaghetti eating. Seniors led the tally for spirit night as well as the entire week, with sophomores taking second, juniors third, and freshmen placing fourth. The week concluded with a Valentine ' s Day dance, proving very profitable for the Student Congress and worth all their appreciated effort.
