II I Gyv- vji Promising Future For Mustang Players The 1986-87 men ' s varsity baskefbaJJ team started off its promising season in fine ashion by winning its first three games. All six seniors on the team had virtually no game experience, with the exception of Steve Grant. Despite this situation, the team pulled off a thrilhng double overtime victory against South Lyon at their first home game. The winning streak continued against Novi at home, and then again ver- sus Churchiii. Coach Omar Harrison and seniors Steve Grant, Dave McCreadie, Donn Hubbard, Dan Magdich, Tony Briningstool, and ]im Cerretani then had three cliffhanging victories under their beJt. Un- fortunately, momentum swung the other way as the Mustangs dropped their next six games. Hungry for a win, Northville pulled out a victory over first place Canton to break the losing streak. With the strong support of the many juniors on the team, the future of Mustang basketbajj looks bright. Upper right: Donn Hubbard ' s scary face frightens his opponent. Ending their regular season with 10 wins and 9 losses, the Mustangs, as host of the district tournament, defeated Stevenson in the first round and then eliminated North Farm- ington. The tournament concluded with a face-off against neighboring rival Novi. The IVlustangs never shpped from the lead, thanks to their strong rebounding and 16 point con- tribution from Karen Baird. The Mustangs carried away a 49 — 46 victory and the first N HS women ' s basketball district title. In addition to the outstanding team work, the Mustangs ' superior individual talent boosted their per- formance. Tricia Ducker was named to the all-area and all-division teams. Sophomore Debbie Stevens received honorable mention for the all-area team and senior Sue Schrader was selected for the all- area second team. At the end of the season, the team elected Tricia Ducker most valuable player, fulie Anger best defensive player, and Jeannine LaPrad most irr.proved player. WOMEN ' S BASKETBALL 97
