And Now The Weather! Winter storm warnings, news bulletins, school closings, and national disaster precautions were frequently heard during January 1977. Falling below -20°F, the temperature, with a windchill of -63°F, put a freeze on numerous corporations and industries . Many public and private schools closed , including Northview, which apparently did not dishearten the students. Several main highways remained closed contributing to the problem of impassable bus routes . The schools in Washington Township were closed on January 10-11, January 17-21, and again on January 27-28. In order to conserve fuel, thermostats were kept at a low temperature , and water taps were kept running to avoid frozen pipes . During the school day thermostats were set at 65°F, but after school the thermostats were turned down to 55°F. Window shades were kept closed to shut out the cold, and everyone wore warmer clothing to school. These regulations remained in effect until March 1 . The missed school days did not have to be made up since they were listed under the category of a national disaster . The students considered it an extra vacation , and the second semester was a week late in starting . ' The three little kittens . . . 79
