band, also known as the Black and Gold Sound Ma- cine, could usually be heard practicing. Prior to the opening of school in September, the i band's musicians met twice every day to prepare for the coming football season, along with many competitions they entered. As a result of their sincere dedication, the Sound Machine was invited to more competitions this year T than ever in the past. Placing first in Escondido and Azusa halftime competitions, along with the music sweepstakes in the Glendora competition, early in Octo- ber, the band also participated in halftime tourna- ments in Chaffey and West Covina. Other events in- cluded parades at the Los Angeles County Fair, Disney- land, and Magic Mountain. Having done well in the last few years at competition, the band was honored when they were invited to par- ticipate in the 1978 Fiesta Bowl ceremonies held in Arizona. Mr. Doug Campbell, the band director, feels that the year was a success with Drum Major Glen McWherter, Assistant Drum Major Scott Stonestreet and a fine group of musicians. When asked the difference between this year's band and the bands of other years, Mr. Campbell answered that it was, The speed at which they learned things. This group, consisting of 15 girls, practiced each morning from 7:00 to 8:00 and again in the evening from 6:00 to 8:00. The purpose of these prac- tices was to perfect their parade and half-time routines. During the summer these girls attended Camp of Champs at the University of California: at La Jolla. Each day they attended three classes in which they learned not only the basic funda- mentals but made up new and dif- ferent routines. Each night these routines were judged and prizes awarded. On the last day they were awarded a spirit stick for their display of devotion. The Tall Flag unit performed with the band in every competi- tion, parade and half-time show. Toward the end of the 1977-78 school year try-outs for captain and co-captain were held. At this time money was raised to pay for camp expenses.
