They demonstrated this by devoting much of their spare time to perfecting cheers and routines. While at camp in Malibu the girls became better acquainted while learning new routines and skills to be used in the coming year. For their outstanding performing ability, they won a 4th place award as a squad and each girl won in- dividual ribbons. During the school year, these songleaders had the opportu- nity to put to use their new ideas at football and basketball games. They performed special routines at a few rallies and at other events such as Back to School Night. Aside from these activities, they also delivered to the athletes on the varsity teams and painted posters for the games. 208 Song Josie Tan and Terri Garcia eye opponents as they gain age. 3 .jk r Karen Heinze and Mary O'Hanlon watch Vikings near go- line

While at summer camp, they were asked to perform for KNBC Channel 4 News. Northviews' varsity squad, and squads from other schools performed a cheer they had learned at the camp. On July 26, after arriving home from N. C. A. Camp of Champs, these six girls were able to watch themselves on television. Along with cheering at class competitions these girls tried to encourage both students and adults to sup- port Northview and the Viking teams. During the year, besides cheering at football and bas- ketball games, this unit performed routines to the fight song and alma mater, delivered cakes, cupcakes, and candy to the varsity team mem- bers, and painted posters. Before leaving for cheerleading camp at Pep- perdine University last summer, the flag twirl- ers practiced long and hard on a routine to be performed there. This routine won them a rib- bon in the outstanding category. At camp the girls realized that each girl added her own tal- ents and abilities to the group and this could be seen in their cheers and routines. With a big smile, Kim Klauck chuckles at the follies of the other flag twirlers. Flag 209
