218 Tjjgck fkcli 'TZA' r -ff.. After the delay of four cancelled meets, track and field finally got under way in the league opener against Bassett. Acting as tri- ca tains for the team were Robert Boada, jeff Fleming and Bill Pry, all returning letter- men. Both Boada and Pry were part of the 440 yd. relay team, alon with Scott La Valle and Mark Fischer. Boacfa also ran both high and low hurdles as did Fleming. Speeding in the 100 and 220 yd. sprints were captain Pry and Mark Fischer. Northview's distance men, Doug Best, Henry Ynez, Bill McPher- son and john Fetcho, found their cross country experience held them in good stead. ln ot er track events Northview saw Ed Krug, Ken Best, Neal Van Der Aarde and Eric Freed in the 880, while Krug, Tony Faith, john Cameron and Brian Curle ran the mile relay. Other trackmen inckuded Bill Warren and Scott La Valley as hurdlers and john Cameron, the Vikin 440 runner. ln the field events, high jump, long jump, pole vault and shot ut, Northview's con- testants showed much strength and deter- mination. lohn Balazs, Tony Faith, Dale Shores and Stan Stupor entered competi- tion as Viking shot putters, while Tony Ca- masta, Rob Garrettson and Richard Waas reached new heights as pole vaulters. Bill Warren and Scott La Valley, aside from their efforts as trackmen, competed in both the high jump and the long jum , as did Sam Rowell. Northview's other hi h jumper, Rolrg Ewry, also displayed fine taient on the ie . Unlike cross countr ,track and field scor- ing is done by awarcling the first, second, and third place man 5,3 and 1 points, re- spectively. At the end of the meet, these points are totaled, the victor being the team with the most oints to it's credit. Despite a cljefeat in the league opener, coaches Westphall, Wilkes and Greer ex- pect a successful '74 season hoping to pave the way for even more victorious years ahead.

Despite its few members this year's sophomore traclf and field team displayed a lot of effort and talent. y The green grass of the inf field saw Rick Adams in the pole vault and David lone: and Harold Hippler as Ions jumpers. Greg Ha n saw actio as the sophomore high jumper while Bill Nichols, anothe pole vaulter, engaged in heavy competition on the track as a 100 yd. sprinter and a membe of the 440 relay team. Nichol relay teammates were Hipple and Kurt Kuntzman, who wa also a hurdler and sprinter fo the sophomores. Viking 441 men included Hahn, Stev Pullen, and Shaiterer, all CJ whom also ran the mile relay Northview also saw Puller compete in both the high ano- low hurdles. leff Bunker, thi sophomores' only distanc man, kept u a steady pact and effort to hjelp him to man 2 mile victories. Working with the varsit team at practices helped man sophomore track and fieli men realize the continual el fort and determination neede to secure a seat on next year varsity. It also gave the entirn Viking track team incentive t work as a unit toward a sua cessful season.
