Otto, the first principal of Northview High School. Mr. Otto was born in Modesto, California. After grad-u- ating from Downey High School, where he was elected Student Body President, he attended Pomona College for one year andlthen transferred to Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo. He then attended the University of California at Davis where he received his B.A. degree. Mr. Otto re- cently was awarded his M.A. degree in Administration from Los Angeles State College. With most of his necessary schooling behind him there came another important step in Mr. Otto's life. He en- listed in the Navy for four years and served as a lieuten- ant. He is married to Lois Beverly Haueter and they have four children. Before coming to Northview, Mr. Otto was a teacher of agriculture and in 1954 was appointed Vice- Principal at Covina High School. Good fortune has been with Mr. Otto through' his Mile- stones of Youth and now the good fortune is ours in having a principal with a friendly smile, ci pleasing per- sonality, a sense of humor, and who always has helpful advice for teachers and students alike. lt is with great admiration and appreciation that we dedicate this 1961 Yearbook. Zi! 't College Navy Family gimlldfuf V4dmi14isfmti01f1 42:1 QM eft BOARD OF TRUSTEES to right. Robert M. Viney, Lowell B. Miller, C. H. Brubaker, president, William L. Mclntyre, and Wayne C. Bates. DR. PAUL B. SALMON Superintendent As the old progresses to the new, the Covina School District has been reborn The Covina-Valley Unified School District. The Board of Trustees, working, with the Administration, has met the challenge of an ever growing school district with hard work. They have spent many hours and given much thought to the strengthen- ing of the Covina-Valley Unified School District. With a growing concern for our students, they, have made every effort to provide fine facilities and an excellent staff of' educators. .sadis- DR. RAGENE FARRlS LELAND B. NEWCOMER WH-U5 MAXSON Department of Secondary Schools Educational Services Business 56fviCeS A dminisfratizw Wilbur F. Otto, Principal For the second time we review the year's significant achievements at Northview High School. We turn these pages with pride as each picture reflects the true Viking spirit and indomitable drive so evident with each under- taking. As we stand on the threshold of our third year we salute those students who will return to form our first senior class. We look to them with respect and appreciation for the work and spirit they contributed to the progress of Northview from its inception to the present. Let us all continue to share in the steady march for truth and knowledge so that we can face our chal- lenges with the some confidence and enthusiasm that are reflected in this pictorial summary of another good year. Helen F. Burvvell, Girls' Assistant Principal The first two years of our school are now completed! What an opportunity and a challenge it has been to those students here at Northview! History has truly been in the making. It has been you, who are now on our campus, .who have laid the foundations for our future generations of high school students. So many firsts have been yours to establish. You have, through careful thinking and planning, organized Northview's first student government, the first club program, the first athletic program-achievements too numerous to mention. You have accepted the challenge of develop- ing a new school. With continued able leadership by our fine Principal, Mr. Otto, Northview's horizons are unlimited. James A. Snyder, Boys' Assistant Principal Northview High School had its beginning in September of 1959. At that time there were no new buildings, no new campus, and no traditions. The students and fac- ulty had only a strong desire to s-ucceed as a common goal. The 1960-61 school year is the product of that goal. The tremendous success achieved is due to our strong desire to succeed, but it is also due to more than this. lt is due to the excellent leadership of our Princi- pal, W. F. Otto, and his interest and concern for the best for the students and faculty of Northview. Secondly, the abundant amount of loyalty, strength, determination, and pride which our Viking students have displayed during this year have played no small part in the establishment of 'traditions which bind us together. Northview High School is far in the lead of the race for being the best. Later they are questioned on what they have heard. The teacher may communicate with each student separately or as a group. It is also possible for the students to communicate with each other. wmv wl CLERICAL STAFF Quietly working behind the scenes with tireless efficiency are our secretaries and clerks who see that many different tasks are fulfilled, Without their contribution none of our offices or the library could function effectively. Not only do they accomplish their regular work but are always willing to lend an extra hand to students and teachers alike. Among these activities the Council sponsored the first dance at our new school following the Pomona Catholic- Northview b a s ke t b all game and the St. Patrick's Day dance. Another major job of the Council was selecting the choices for class rings which were then voted upon by the entire Sopho- more class. JUNIOR The object of the Junior Class Council is to represent the Junior Class, to promote school activities and school spirit. This year the Council sponsored the second an- nual Slave Sale, the Talent Show, sock-hops and our major proiect, the Senior Quad. FRESHMAN The primary obiective of the Fresh- man Class Council is to acquaint the class with Northview High School and to interest its members in becoming active on the campus. During this school year the Coun- cil has sponsored a Hay Ride and a Derby Hat sale. 23 24 fudcu Cliff Heisterberg - Judge l I Diane Helfrnan - Judge 3 E Phil Catania -Judge we is Sue Voissem - Recorder Sue Willis f Recorder ' .A.Wvm'wr i' W. --V 5 Q ' ste- . ,. 1,., x ,Q Harold Burnett Bailitf M X. Prior to the first issue in November the T4 staff members were busy learning how to write leads, news stories, features, editorials, sports stories, interviews and head- lines. Mr. Myers, the staff advisor, also covered the im- portance of MEETING THAT DEADLINE! The Valhalla, which means Viking heaven, is the first official Northview student publication that is profession- ally printed with photographs. Future plans include having the newspaper printed on the campus by print shop students. . Popular Valhalla features included club news, iokes, classy chassis, new teachers and an exchange 'column. The newspaper was pressed this year to find sufficient funds to cover publication costs. The main problems of the year-receive money necessary to keep the Valhalla growing and expanding in pace with the student body. In an attempt to raise funds the staff sold football sched- ules and school pennants.
