The 1979 Girl's Basketball Team enjoyed it's most successful season ever at NIHS. The girls finished the regular season with a 12 - 0 record and then won both tournament games to finish the season with a 14 - 0 record - the first basketball team to go unde- feated at NjHS. The Norsewomen were led by Captain's Diana Beard and jenny Murray as well as Center jenny Hamlen. Because of their outstanding play during the season, these girls were selected to the Roanoke Valley District All - Star Team. Once again the Norsewomen had three players to break the 100 point mark in one season. Diana Beard had 191 points, jenny Murray 142, and jenny Hamlen 106 points. jenny Hamlen led the team in rebounds with 115, with jenny Murray adding 94 rebounds. jenny Murray led the team in assists with Diana Beard sec- ond. Diana Beard led the team in steals with jenny Murray close behind. Patricia Peroulas played her best game of the season in helping the Norsewomen win the tournament championship. Wendy Graham, an 8th grader, also made a solid contribution to the team. Coach Marilyn Bussey made the following com- ments, We were really surprised with our success this year. After practice started we felt like we had a good chance to made the play - offs as one of the top teams. But no one expected us to go undefeat- ed. This team's success was due to team play. The girls really worked with each other to take the best shots they could. I was also very pleased with our defensive play. We held our opponents to 26.9 points a game which is very good considering how high our offensive average was t48.3j. What about next year? Obviously, you can not predict what kind of season you will have. But we have several girls returning who have playing exper- ience so we are very optimistic about next yearl -4, +-.... Miss Graube congratulates Miss Bussey on her ter- rific coaching that brought the girls basketball sea- son in with a straight win season. You can see that the girls really work together.
