Our goals were set high and sometimes seemed impossible, but we refused to give in. This was going to be a year of firsts for the Regiment, a year of recognition and of dreams becoming reality. This was to be our year! i The work was hardg the sacrifice great and the price high, but eventually those goals were reached! We now look back with pride at a job well done and know that we did it together. lt was a team effort, consisting of everyone pulling their share of the load. We worked together, therefore we succeeded together. We are truly a family! We started our work in the summer at U.S.L. Camps, Where the Color Guard received honors. RECAP OF SEASON The Northside Vikings started the season off with a bang by beating Acadiana in the Jamboree by a score of 35-15. After beating Carencro by 13-7, the Vikings hit a drought and lost the next four games. The Vikings fought back with pride, however, and won their next five games to win the District 5-AAA Championship with an undefeated 5-0 record. The Vikings then entered the State Playoffs for the third time in the last four years. In the Regional game against Zachary, the Vikings became Regional champs by beating Zachary 7-O. The Vikings then entered the Quarterfinal round QFinal 8 teamsj and had to play the lohn Curtis Patriots who were ranked ffl in the State in AAA. The Vikings fell short and ended their season with a 7-5 record overall. The Vikings had a real fine season and brought respect to the school and the Football Program. To remember forever what Northside was like this year, we must remember what the world was like this year. Herein lies a sampling of both, some good, some bad, some trivial, some earthshattering, and all true. So read and remember, Northside and the world . . . JUNE 1987 The U.S.S. Stark is accidentally hit by an Iraqi Exocet missile and 39 American sailors die in the Persian Gulf protecting the right of 'ffreedom of the seas. Elliot Ness and The Untouchables return to eliminate AI Capone again no less! The remake this time starred Kevin Cosner, Sean Connery, and Robert De Niro. Mass protests in Korea threatened the summer Olympic Games of 1988. Only time and the future will reveal what affects these protests will have. We will be out of school. JULY 1987 Veterans of the Vietnam War hold a rally at the base of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.. The country is 211 and many questions remains unanswered. The Iran-Contra hearings continue on national television. Oliver North becomes a hero to some and Ollie Army goes on the offensive to defend him. lf that makes any sense. Quack cure for A.l.D.S. Spring up raising false hopes. AUGUST 1987 Northwest Flight 225 crashes on takeoff from Detroits Metro Airport. lt's the second worst crash in U.S. History. ln all 156 people die one survives cradled in her mothers dead arms. Her name is Cecelia Cichan. School begins on August 25. SEPTEMBER 1987 Judge Robert Bork is nominated to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court. He is eventually rejected after an ugly debate between President Reagan and liberal groups across the country. Pope John Paul ll, the traveling Pope visits Louisiana. Millions of Americans turn out to see the Pontiff in his tour of the U.S. Senator Joseph Biden withdraws from the presidential race when charges of plagiarism surface. OCTOBER 1987 Russians Vietnam , the war in Afghanistan rages on. The Soviets begin talking about getting out. T58 George Bush emerges as the front runner for the Republican, presidential nomination of the summer of 1988. Wall Streets whiz kids are exposed in a powerful new film starring Michael Douglas, and Martin and Charlie Sheen. The N.H.S. football team struggles in the early going, losing four of the first five games. The team does not quit however, and soon turn it around. The Minnesota Twins win the World Series in 7 games. Candidate Buddy Roemer defeats three term Governor Edwin W. Edwards for the Governorship. The Roemer Revolution takes over and drastic changes are made in state government. NOVEMBER 1987 A The Crash of 1987 hits the stock market putting the world financial community in a panic. Billions of dollars are lost, but this time a far reaching crisis is avoided through international cooperation. Four U.S. Navy destroyers demolish an Iranian oil rig in the Persian Gulf. Confrontations continue between the two powers. Douglas Ginsburg, President Reagans second nominee to fill the vacant Supreme Court post is also rejected because he once smoked marijuana and had interests in a case he once ruled on. DECEMBER 1987 President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev meet for Summit Ill. Progress is made and strategic arms control and the leaders decide to meet again in the spring of 88 . Northside football team regroups and sweeps District 5-AAA. They advance all the way to thequarter finals before losing to eventual State Champion John Curtis. Gary Hart returns to the presidential race after a scandal with Donna Rice, for a little while anyway. He drops out again weeks later. The New Orleans Saints, led by Coach lim Mora, have a winning season C10-65 and make the playoffs for the first time in its twenty year history as an N.F.L. club. JANUARY 1988 The Dona Paz, a Philippine ferry sinks after colliding with a freighter. Twenty-six survive, over 1,500 die. Ronald Gene Simmons kills 16 people in Dover, Arkansas in a mass murder spree. Most of the victims were - members of his own family. The U.S. Supreme Court grants school administration board powers to suppress controversal stories on AIDS, abortion, teen suicides and other topics in school Publications. Dr. Kurt Schmersahl leaves N.H.S. to become the new principal at Lafayette High. Mrs. lane Hyatt replaces him as the new assistant principal. T59 l i Washington Redskins win Super Bowl XX. FEBRUARY 1988 Panamanian strongmon Manuel Noriega is accused of dealing drugs which enter the U.S. The Reagan Administration l demands his resignation and extradition to America to stand trial. He refuses! The 1988 Winter Olympic open in Calgary, Canada. The U.S. team has a bad year. Michael Dukakis emerges as a front runner for the Democratic presidential nomination. Two year old Jessica McClue talls down a well in Texas and the country and the world anxiously wait four days until she is rescued. MARCH 1988 The U.S. recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments of Martin Luther King, Jr. on the twentieth anniversary of his death. 1 l Gang and drug wars rage in most of Americas largest cities. A.l.D.S. education is introduced at Northside for the first time. Jesse Jackson emerges as ,a serious force in the race for president. No one believes he can win, but everyone knows he will have a lot of delegates, and a lot of influence at the Democratic Convention in July. Northside's own Sadie Hawkins occurred as scheduled on Saturday March 26, 1988. Ramona Boudreaux was crowned queen. She was picked from the Track Court. APRIL 1988 Gas warfare is unleashed in the Iran-Iraq war. Five thousand people are killed in Halabja, lran. MAY 1988 Winning Colors wins the Kentucky Derby becoming only the third philly in the 114 year history ol the race to do so. Northside High's Junior-Senior Prom went out with a bang Saturday May 7, 1988. lt lasted from 8:00-11:00 at the U.S.L. Ballroom. lt was truly a night to remember. Lelia Trahan and Randolph Williams were crowned Queen and King. On May 17, 1988 the Seniors received there caps and gowns and the Juniors received their Senior Rings. lt turned out to be an exciting day for all. On May 27, 1988, Northside's Senior class graduated in the Municipal Auditorium at 7:30 in the evening.
