Challenge for Students Among the over 450 entrants in the annual Special Olympics at Cen- tral High School were five Northside students: Lori Miller, Wayne Sim- mons, Darrell Chambers, Robert Barton, and Randy Anthony. Hosted by Muncie for the eighth year, the opening ceremonies were conducted much like the World Olympics. One athlete from each of the six counties, Blackford, Jay, Ran- dolph, Madison, Grant, and Delaware, helped to carry around a small torch which was used to light the larger torch which then remained lit throughout the activities. Competition in swimming and track and field were divided into age and ability groups, as well as male and female. Events were judged by the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority, while McDonaId's provided food and drinks for the participants. James Powers Freshman Robert Barton takes an early lead as the Special Olympics' 50 yard dash gets under way. Wayne Simmons, Randy Anthony, Darrell Chambers, and Robert Barton walk back to tjhe starting point after each placed in the ash. Expansion 25

KX. Seniors Debbie McClellan and Carol Jennings search through the many resources at the Ball State library to find information for their term papers. Carefully studying his reference book, Jack Hammerstein decides what information will be necessary for his English paper. xDredded Term Paper' When something has to be faced, it's always best to meet it head on, and that's what the seniors who braved second semester senior English did. They didn't have much choice. The dreaded term paper is a definite requirement for a student enrolled in senior English, and D-day fdue-dayi was March 15. The winter weather played its role in this area also. Libraries, home- away-from-home for many, closed early and those whose schedules were complicated by jobs saw their lives flash before their eyes. Topics were decided upon, sources found, and libraries com- pletely explored. Notes were taken and guarded with one's life . . . then came the writing. Worrying about accumulating 2300 to 2700 words began the process of writing. i l've 63 words, only 2237 words to go! i Then came the scratching out. f Maybe I could use a comma. i Having the correct number of words followed by typing and typing and typing, and then it was March 14, 11:45 p.m. and it was done, or was it?!'? The seniors celebrated and the teachers winced. They knew what was ahead. Receiving many visits from the various high school students doing term papers, the stacks of books at BSU await the young researchers.
