q7'+Jwf?g1 Q qi The co-captains, Wayne Bacon and Pat Olfers, discuss plans for an upcoming game with Coach Barborak. lt was the duty of these co-captains to keep the team together, to handle the demanding affairs with the referee, and to keep the fire and hustle in the team even when the score may be against them. Upon these two boys rested the possible outcome of the games, for their decisions had to be wise and speedy, mistakes could often times prove to be fatal for the team. Combined with the knowledge of Coach Barborak, these two boys helped guide the team to the bi-district championship for the first time in the history of Northside High School. The Northside Rams rose from the depths of seeming obscurity to become bi-district champs of district 27-AA and 28-AA. Almost everyone, opponents and backers, thought that the Rams would not have as good a record as the year before. It was thought that they did not have the ability or the experience to win more than half of their games. Coach Barborak and his boys paid no attention to these people and set out to surprisethem. They worked hard at each practice session and as all good teams do, improved with each game until at the end of the season they wound up with 24 wins and 7 losses. These 7 losses, however, were to only 4 teams. They were runners-up to Devine in the Devine tournament and runners-up to McArthur in the big San Antonio Invitational Tournament. They had a 14 game winning streak before they lost to Clear Creek in the Regional Tournament. They won district and bi-district in ll straight wins, without a loss. They placed 3 boys on the all-district team and one boy on the all-tournament team in the Regional Tournament. How did they do it? They did it, not because they had exceptional ability or speed, but because they had the DESIRE TO WIN. As the season progressed the greater this desire became and the more games they won. The more games they won, the harder they worked to improve themselves. Most of the credit goes to Coach Barborak who instilled that DESIRE into the boys by having such a great DESIRE that it rubbed off on the boys. He also taught the boys how to play the game to win fairly. The rest, of course, was up to the boys who carried out their part better than what was expected of them. They played together as a team, not as individuals. It is easy to see this by the fact that they had averages of approximately 11, 12, and 13 points. Each member did his part each game, whether it was rebounding, ball handling, shooting, or keeping the fire and hustle going. The fine work of Coach Barborak is illustrated by the fact that he took over a team four years ago that had not won a game the previous year and developed it into a championship team in four short years. This is arealtribute to a coach who wants to win so badly thathe sacrifices his sleep, food, and other necessities to try to improve the team. bi-district titles Patrick Olfers - Pat 's amazing accuracy on set and jump shots put him among the top scorers in the district. He was chosen by the coaches of the district teams to be on the all-district basketball team and was elected by his teammates to be one of the year's co-captains. This was Pat 's second year on the varsity squad, he came from the B team year before last. He has become quite proficient in the game and was chosen to be in the North- side Hallof Fame becuase of his fine work. This was Pat's senior year, and he has plans to continue his career in sports while he attains his college education.
