Doerffler leads successful grid squad For the past sLx years, Northrop Higli School has built a winning tradi- tion in every sport. Northrop football is no exception. Year in and year out, our Bruins have compiled outstanding performances. Led by Head Coach Buzz Doer- feller, the gridders opened the season on June 10th. With only two starters returning from last years city ru nner-up teams, the ine.xperienced Bruins had to swallow their first losing season the hard way. I ' ve never had a team give so much and have so many heartbreakers. re- called Coach Doerfeller. Northrop swallowed their first losing season by losing two games by a field goal in the last quarter, and four games in a row by a slim margin totaling IS points Despite these dissappointments. the team kept fighting hard and went on to dump LaPorte, Bishop Luers, Wayne and Concordia; falling only to Bishop Dwenger, North Side, Snider, Elkart Memorial and Huntington. Mike Mulligan and Bill Hicov, both seniors, shared tlie captain role this year. They paced the gridders all sea- son long by shutting out three teams, tliey stopped a long term winning streak of Bishop Luers, tliey also out- scored tlieir opponants by fifty points, only allowing 99 points for tlie opposi- tion all season long.
