I'm hesitant about trying strange foods. Imagine my surprise in discovering the artichoke! Two years ago I was invited to my friend Lucy’s house for dinner. I was most afraid to go because I had heard that her mother was a gourmet cook. When she brought in the first course. I was shocked to see what I thought was a green prickly cactus decorating the plate. I whispered to Lucy, Is that edibleV’ Lucy laughed out loud and said, ”Haven't you ever seen an artichoke before?” So I thought I'd better eat it and not embarrass Lucy's mother. I timidly began to pluck the leaves and stick them into my mouth whole. Then it was Mrs. Warner’s turn to laugh. She explained how to eat it. She said, Dip it in the mayonnaise and only scrape the white fleshy part with your teeth. I proceeded to follow her instructions. But I did not find the artichoke leaves very tasty. Then I made my great discovery! I uncovered a hairy, white core. I didn't know what it was or if I was supposed to eat it. Lucy’s mother said, I hope you'll eat the best part.” and I said. That’s the BEST part?” Then she brought in some olive oil and said, Dip it in this. ” It was one of the most delicious dishes I had ever eaten That’s how the artichoke and I became friends. Now I think the salad course is the best part of the dinner. But it must have hearts of artichoke in it! Anonymous The Day it Rained Rainy days can be fun even though you miss the sun. You can sit in front of the fire and watch the flames, maybe read a book or play some games. Perhaps you are fighting with the Arabian Knights, or with Mary Poppins flying kites. Perhaps you are a princess in a silken gown sitting straight with a golden crown. Go outside in a yellow coat and hope it rains so much you 'll float. And when lightning fills the sky, you might as well go home dry. Like magic when you reach the door, a lake appears on Mom s clean floor. Two days of rain can really be a pain, so when you wake up tomorrow, instead of rain, I hope you see the sun again. JAFFEE'S, INC. 810 NICOLLET 333-3354 143 am often overcome with the concept of life as a river. A river that flows very fast. In that river is all the beauty, all the glory and, at the same time, all the agony and the pain that any of us has either dreamed of or experienced. It seems that most of us spend our time musing on or ignoring the river and all the things it carries in its flow. We can look into it and see only the beauty and blindly dream on. On the contrary, we can look in and see the arms and legs and faces of bombed children, and either refuse to believe what we see or go mad. Or, we can decide to jump into the river and do whatever is possible to begin a process that will keep it from clogging up for all time and ceasing to run. The first image that comes to my mind when I hear the expression peace of mind” is of someone spotting a puddle of clear water somewhere off away from the river, settling quietly in the middle of it and saying he's found peace. I sound cynical, but I am not. I simply think that peace of mind is not something that can honestly be found in isolation or exclusion of the rest of the world. And the world is in chaos. So I wish to try and be real. It is irrelevant to speak about peace of mind and relevant to speak about work. Let us certainly dismiss the concept of peace of mind as an end, or as something static that someone reaches and then stays there forever amen. If that is peace of mind, give me an image more suitable—a swan or a cabbage, perhaps. No, friends, I sincerely think that life is a struggle, and an upstream one. I think it involves much pain, and many things that we may sometimes consider to be sacrifice. The work I talk about involves faith, for if we are to build a world that will give us a future, it will be the first time that world has ever been built. It means we must be ready to live for it, and to die for it when the time comes. But I do think this; When you jump in, when you say, OK, I am my brother’s brother, and I'm ready to spend my life fighting for his right to live, ” your life can become very real. I think only then, when you recognize that you are intimately related to every living being on the face of the earth, only then are you being honest with yourself. Being honest with yourself gives you a cornerstone on which to begin a vital, frightening, exciting and joyous attempt at living I want only to repeat this part. There is pain, there is joy, there is joy. And perhaps, when we do our work well, there will be little patches of peace. Joan Baez If there isn’t a river here, then let's make one or bring part of it through here. 144 Hoigaards 3550 South Highway 100 Minneapolis, Minn. Eat, drink and be merry at. Compliments of Olson Brothers’ Pharmacy Edina Congratulations Lynn! °Oal Love, Mom Dad 172 For myself, I feel that I should know very little about God if Jesus Christ had not come into the world and revealed God to us, as he said he did, and as I believe he did. And I should have very little confidence in immortality from all the arguments from analogy or human longings, if I did not believe that Jesus rose from the dead, as he said he would rise, and as we are told he did. I feel as Paul did, “If Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. “But now is Christ risen from the dead and become the first fruits of them that slept. Believing this as I do, I recognize in Jesus not a mere man, however remarkable, but a messenger from God who had power to lay down his life and power to take it up again, a being fitted in all respects by character and power to be the light of the world and to reveal God to us as he really is. This, that and the other may disappear or change or perish, but Jesus Christ remains the same yesterday, today, and forever, Son of Man and Son of God, the Divine Saviour of the World. Member FDIC 179 Revolutionary Lens for Truer Colors World's First Through-the-Lens World's Best-Selling 35mm Camera Honeywell Pentax Spotmatic II; there is no finer camera made. The world's best-selling 35mm camera is now a whole lot better! You get vibrant color, flare-free image and intricate detail no other camera in the world can match, because no other camera lens has a super-thin, 7-layer coating. More light passes through the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar and you get crisper results under difficult lighting conditions. Visit your dealer and compare his best conventional lens with the new Super-Multi-Coated Takumar. You'll see the glare reflected from the ordinary lens surface; you'll sec deeper into the Takumar. Much, much more light is being transmitted than is reflected. The fabulous Spotmatic II with 50mm f 1.4 Super-Multi-Coated Takumar lens lists for about S350. Other fine Honeywell Pentax cameras start at less than S200. Choose from 35 Quality Takumar Lenses When your first roll of film is developed, you'll see the superior resolving power, contrast and color balance your Takumar lens makes possible. The Takumar family includes 35 unbeatable lenses, from a 17mm wide angle to 1000mm long, for super-wide views to portraits shot from a half-block away. All with precise threaded mountings so perfectly matched to the camera you can change them in the dark! And there's a system of close-up acces- sories that lets you easily explore the fascinating mini-world of postage stamps, pins and posies. Behind Every Lens, The World's Best Metering System Pentax engineers invented through-the-lens metering, perfected and refined it into the Spotmatic's full-format integrating method that's most accurate by far for most pictures you'll ever shoot. The stop down system gives you automatic depth of field preview. Twelve Great Honeywell Pentax Cameras, All With That Very Special Feel It's uncanny! Even a beginning photographer instinctively handles the compact Pentax like an old pro. Every Pentax is beautifully balanced, with controls so conveniently located it feels like an extension of your hands. Look through the dazzling bright viewfinder, see how easily you can snap images in and out of focus. Even the big S900 6X7 gives you 35mm eye-level handling ease, the only Ideal Format SLR system that does it. With its whopping 2V«x2V negative and incredible lens system, the Honeywell Pentax 6X7 is fast becoming the standard of excellence with professionals. Get the feel of the Honeywell Pentax Motor Drive. For just under one grand, you can fire off 250 shots in 90 seconds. Pentax is the system you can never outgrow. Will It To Your Favorite Grandkid. Pentax shutter speeds stay fantastically accurate, Takumar lenses stay razor sharp and the built-in meter takes years of hard use. Not all photo dealers are authorized to sell Honeywell Pentax products. If your dealer doesn't have them, shop elsewhere. Keep in mind that spiffing is a common practice in the sale of many other brands. This means the distributor pays the dealers' salesmen, often between $5 and $10, for every sale they make of his brand. Be sure the product you buy is recommended for its own merits.
