Text from Pages 1 - 160 of the 1983 volume:

HIGH SCHOOL 1983 UNITED WE STAND School Spirit is developing one per- son’s pride into the school's. If we could take every single person’s pride, and join that altogether, we would have a large quantity of school spirit. It would be wonderful if everyone — including teachers — could join together and all be in favor of the same thing: The school spirit of Northridge High School. — Shelly VanFossen Freshman Cheerleader I think School Spirit is a feeling a person gets when he knows he has helped a team to victory. It is having pride in your school and being able to pick the team up when they are behind. You do not have to be a cheerleader to have school spirit. You just have to let the team know that you are behind them all the way. Whether it be with cheers, claps, or just being there, the team always appreciates it. — Diane Williams Sophomore Cheerleader Spirit Is . . . more than cheering and yelling for your team. It is supporting your classmates when they are losing as well as winning. School spirit is a feeling that your school is one of the best. It is defending your school when someone puts it down. Having spirit is having pride in your school. Trying and working together makes us all proud to say We are Vikings. — Kathy Francisco Senior Cheerleader DIVIDED WE FALL Spirit Is ... a feeling that binds together groups, encourages pride and earns a school its reputation. Spirit is when you walk down the hall on a Friday afternoon and can see everyone from cheerleaders to teachers decked out in the props of spirit day and in green-and-white. Spirit is when the electricity you feel building in the halls on a game day lingers on through a pep rally and into the game. Spirit is when a stranger walks into a gym on the evening of a basketball game to hear an ecstatic crowd cheering for a team that is behind by twenty points. Spirit is when there is as much support and interest in a musical function, girls basketball or volleyball game or a junior varsity football game as there is at a varsity football game. Spirit is when your cheerleaders have enough enthusiasm to lift up the crowd; and the crowd has enough respect to appreciate their efforts. Spirit is when, at age 15, I can attend a homecoming game and feel proud to stand up an sing the NHS Alma Mater. 3 — Kim Postle, Junior Cheerleader c Go Northridge Vikings Go you Vikings. Go! We rt on our way to victory For we always fight to win! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! Go Northridge Vikings Go you Vikings Go! You do your best And well do the rest For a victory at NORTHRIDGE HIGH' NORTHRIDGE ALMA MATER Hail to our Northridge. Alma Mater hail. Where ere we wander Thee we ll never fail. Your class has a special meaning to me because I have been able to observe your high school beginning, your yearly progress and now your completion. We have shared many good times. You have shown great pride in Northridge, and as you leave may you continue to progress toward your life's goals. Be of service to others and your rewards will be innumerable. John Hollingsworth Principal 7 DEDICATION They call her the Sarge because of the time she spent in the Marines; but anyone who really knows Mrs. LaValle knows that, under the hard shell she displays, she is one of the most lovable, conscientious and dedicated teachers Northridge has had. She has taught English for seven years with a contagious en thusiasm that guides students to love Shakespeare and write with feeling. One of her many talents is art. Her creative hand made doll collection (shown above) has been displayed several times in the school showcase. The puppets in the above pictures were made by her specifically for use in CARNIVAL, the 1982 All-School Musical. For several years the school newspaper, THE SAGA, was advised by Mrs. LaValle and gave students news about their fellow students and their school. She coached volleyball when she first arrived at Nor- thridge, showing her versatility. For her many contributions to our high school, we dedicate this 1983 yearbook to MRS. Being a mother is even more fun than being a teacher. I have always believed that the best possible leadership displayed by teachers is leadership by example. Everything was so different! It wasn’t anything similar to what I was used to, so it was just difficult to keep up with all the new things. I would re-do many of these if I had the opportunity. Finally, I would invite any of you to join an overseas program, because it could be one of the most impor- tant years of your life. If you happen to have an ex- change student next year at Northridge, keep in mind that we have a different background and it’s hard to adjust. I’d like to thank also the very good faculty of the school for their support. Thank you! The only way to show my appreciation is to say, You’ve got a friend in Spain.” — Antonio Anguita Ruiz Antonio Anguita, “Tony” was an exchange stu- dent from Madrid, Spain, sponsored by The Anderson Family (Karyl Thomas). We were privileged to have him attend our school during the 1982-1983 school year. The following is a thank you written by him to Northridge: TO THE STUDENTS AND FACULTY OF NHS: It would be long and probably boring to explain how thankful I am for the opportunity I have had in coming to the U.S.A. and especially to this school. This experience served to confirm ideas and goals, get a wider knowledge of myself and the world, and I could continue on and on and on. OFFICERS Tod Hastings. President Molly Malone. Anna and Sir Edward Father and Son The polka is done like this. The date was April 29th; the place was the Stoney Creek Country Club. Although it was a little soggy outside, it didn't dampen our spirits. The band was Crosstown Traffic for a second year because everyone enjoyed them so much. We were served an excellent dinner after which the Prom Court was introduced and received flowers. Vernon Slasor was named King and Karyl Thomas was crowned Queen. We danced and took pictures of each other. We didn't have an after prom activity, but we all made our own. It was truly a night to remember. We hope you like it. I would like to thank the staff, first of all, because without them I couldn't ha ve made it. They started in the sum- mer by selling ads, and it didn t stop there. Their dedication became evident as the year progressed. They are the most productive staff I have seen in years. Next my business manager, Tammy: I apologize, because I don't think you had any idea of what you were get- ting yourself into last spring when I asked you to take the job. Thank you for putting up with me, helping me, and following me around on those hectic picture days. Mrs. Froning, I sa ved you for last, not because your time, caring or help came in last; but because you re just the best and you 're supposed to save the best for last. Thank you for listening, being a friend as well as a teacher, and for giving all of us that extra little push we needed. There’s just one more thing I'd like to say to the seniors: It's over! For some of us, the year flew by. Foe others, it seemed endless. We did our thing. We paid our dues. We did it with our own style and grace. We had our own tradi- tions and customs — our own way of doing things. Now that it's over, we can honestly say . . . We were truly ourselves. 1983 Norhian Editor Monica Dougherty 111 DRAMA CLUB Dinner Theater — November Charleys Aunt Arts Festival — February Take a Letter All School Musical — April The King and I Thespian Initiation — May and Banquet Diana Drosos, Patty Ward, Kim Middlestadt, Monica Dougherty, Marla McDavid, Pat Tharp, Tammy Venard, Kent Cook, Jen- nifer Grube, Peggy Zarley, Eric Adams, Mary Jane Walpole, Ann Bynum, Debbie Allen, Amie Sturgis, Karyl Thomas, Tonja Smith, Tina Phelps, Whitney Wasem, Crystal Napier, Melissa Ratai, Andy Buckenberger.
