On her desk is a sign which reads: A clean desk is a sign ot an empty mind. Mrs. DiLeo's desk is not neat — it is covered with books, papers with special supplemental exercises, tons of homework to be graded, and a mini-library file so students can borrow from the collection of books which she has accumulated in her room over the years. This clutter reflects what is uppermost in Mrs. DiLeo's mind — her students. As coach of the Council Bowl team she spent many hours of patient effort working to improve the mental capabilities of team members and was rewarded with a double championship in both county and tournament. As any French Club member can tell you, she gives of her time unselfishly, often staying up until early morning baking the lovely cakes and other pastries sold to earn money for the trip to Quebec. For her outstanding dedication to education, her high academic standards and her concern for students, we hereby dedicate the 1979 Norhian to Alberta DiLeo. 2 NOR THRIDGE SAY ” Now all of you sit down and let me take attendance, and THEN you can go to the library. Does that sound familiar? It has been said to hundreds of students in the past 16 years by Mrs. Edna Dumbauld, who will leave NHS this year. She will be missed. She has done her job well. We of the Norhian staff wish her and Mr. Dumbauld many years of leisure time in the future. Mrs. Florence Hoover will be remembered not only for her dedicated work as the cafeteria supervisor, but also for the bouquets of flowers she placed, on many occasions, in the Northridge office from her personal garden. Mrs. Hoover will retire this year after over 16 years of service. She and Mr. Hoover look forward to traveling in the future. 3 I would first like to thank Mrs. Joyce Poe, the Norhian advisor. Mrs. Poe has worked side by side with the staff and me throughout the year. She has contributed not only her great skill of organization, but also many creative ideas and much needed advice. Without her hard work, dedication, enthusiasm, and patience; this annual would be a near-impossible task. Secondly, 1 wish to thank the 1978-79 Norhian staff. Working on an annual is a far from easy job, but these students tackled it with many long hours of work and frustration. From their efforts, one of Northridge's best yearbooks has been published. Last, but not least, 1 would like to thank those people who helped with the Norhian, but are not members of the Norhian staff. Without the support of the faculty, the help of the administration, and the backing of the student body, this Norhian could not be a success. Thanks to all! — Joy Grandstaff Editor 4 WHY SHOULD WE BREAK UP OUR SNUG AND PLEASANT PARTY? TIME WAS MADE FOR SLAVES, BUT NEVER FOR US SO HEARTY. FOOTBALL TEAM N.H.S. Has Best Season Since 1967 — 5-4-1 The 1978 Football season was filled with ups and downs. The season opened with victories over Millersport and Granville, Northridge's first wins in 23 games. A 0-0 tie with Lakewood was one of the major disappointments of the season as we were held on Lakewood's 6 inch line and the Lakewood offense never crossed our 35 yard line. We strung together exciting wins over Licking Heights, Licking Valley and Utica, before losing a hard fought battle to state champions Newark Catholic 16-0. The 10-9 loss to arch rival Johnstown was also a disappointment as again we were held on downs at the Johnstown one foot line. However, our five victories gave Northridge its first winning season in 10 years, and signaled a start to great success in the future. — Coach Raduege Our Mascot?? Monk — 4 Yr. Lettermen 9 Seniors Volleyball 4-Year Letter Go Tall The 1978 Volleyball Team had a rough season finishing with a great deal of improvement by all team members, who will be looking forward to a better season next year. The honors for the Volleyball team went to Teresa Messer and Linda Moss as the Most Valuable Players on the team. The team voted Letha Downey as the Most Improved Player of the year. Teresa Messer also received Honorable Mention on the Licking County League team. The Junior Varsity team finished their season with 1-8. — Coach Schubert N.H.S. GOLF: 3rd IN TOURNAMENTS The Golf team finished the season with four wins and five losses in Licking County League play. The best performance of the year was our two stroke victory over league contender Johnstown. The Northridge golfers completed the season with a respectable third place showing in the sectional tournament. Marc Hall was named first team all league, while Steve Congrove received honorable mention. — Coach Cuson 92 CROSS COUNTRY COMES BACK After a year's absence, Cross Country running returned to Northridge High School. The Vikings were plagued with a lack of experience in this grueling team sport. Seniors Roger McConnell, Brent White, and Jeff Oyler turned in some fine performances throughout the season. The underclassmen of this squad showed steady improvement and gave indication that our Cross Country team of the future could be competitive next season. — Coach Sullivan VIKE’S ROUNDBA GO VIKES! Northridge fans and students had the opportunity to watch one of the most successful Varsity basketball teams in the school's history during the '78- '79 season. Led by an all Senior unit, the Vikes finished 4th in the always tough L.C.L. Lacking height, but not heart, this group of Seniors hustled their way to many exciting wins. The Senior Basketballeis set a standard for future teams to follow: that dedication, hard work, and determination can lead to a successful season. Following in the footsteps of the Varsity players, the Viking J.V. squad finished a highly successful season, also. The future Vikes finished 2nd in the L.C.L., and missed out on the championship the last night of the season. — Coach Sullivan 98 1979 BOY’S TRACK FINISHES: 5-3 Seniors a 3 The 1979 Boy's Track Team finished with an overall record of 5-3. The team was led by 10 Seniors, all of whom were starting performers. Many performed 3 or 4 events, which is the maximum. The underclassmen, though few in number, were an integral part of the team. Every team member participated and 6 members went to the District. Arin Hawkins in Shot Put; Dave Tuggle in the 220 Yard Dash; Lou Kremple in the Discus; and Mitch Thomas, Joe Kremple, Bill Clark and Dave Tuggle in the 440 Relay. The Most Valuable Track Member for 1979 was Joe Kremple. Dave Tuggle took the trophy for Most Points Scored during the season. The captains for the 1979 team were Jack Liggett, Joe Kremple and Mitch Thomas. — Coach Baker 99 DISTRICT QUALIFIERS 78-79 GIRL’S BASKETBALL PUTS Varsity Jr. Varsity 100 IT ALL TOGETHER: SEASON 9-9 The 1978-79 Girl's Basketball Team put it all together for an overall winning season. After a slow start the Lady Vikes picked up the pace and rolled through the season playing like a balanced team and never gave up. The Vikes finished with a 9-9 season after playing two very tough and exciting tournament games. The Lady Vikes defeated Berne Union by a narrow margin in their first game. They started slow but gave Lancaster Fisher Catholic a scare by tieing the ballgame and taking the game into overtime. The Vikes were defeated 51 to 46, to end a very well played 'defensive game. The honors of the season went: Karen McConnell with Most Rebounds and the Best Defensive Player awards; Teresa Messer with the Best Free Throw Percentage and Most Valuable Player awards; and Robin Schmidt and Sue Owens with the most Improved Players award. Teresa Messer was voted to the Licking County League Team for the second year and Karen McConnell received Honorable Mention from the League. Along with Teresa's other awards, she was also named to the All State Basketball Team, Honorable Mention. The Junior Varsity had a very successful season ending with a 14-1 record and capturing First Place in the J.V. The team was comprised of 2 seniors, 5 juniors, 7 sophomores, and 7 freshman, who compiled a 5-2 record There were many great individual performances throughout the entire season. These being too numerous to mention in any great detail, however, it is necessary to mention some of the accomplishments the team achieved. Despite their youth and inexperience, this was the first year a girls track team has won a dual or triangular meet. Also, the team broke every record possible from previous years and placed 4th in the county and sectional. — Coach Pallante lllllll ill Varsity 3 VARSITY RECORD: 17-10 « i Scoreboard J.V.:3-7 Varsity Johnstown 10-0 Cols.
