X r The Key To Understanding ln 1972-73, your counselors at Northmont High School found their place in time to be a time of change. Some of the changes were the result of the twelve period extended day, the addition of mini-courses in social studies and English, and our first experience with computer scheduling. Those were the changes which tested flexibility, dispositions and endurance in September. Mr. Bratton, Miss Fritch, Miss Murphy and Mrs. Morris share the individual counseling responsibilities. Some changes in ways of communicating information have been implemented. Small group interpretation of tests has been initiated. Availability of a counselor to discuss financial aid with small groups of students at specified times was tried. Printed memos about deadlines, job opportunities and scholarships were distributed. A counselor from the Ohio State Employment Service visited some senior classes, the adult counselor from JVS discussed JVS Adult Education programs with senior business classes. With this knowledge and understanding of yourself, your aptitudes and interests, you can be helped to set realistic goals, make decisions and assume responsibility for carrying out your plans. Miss Fritch and Jeff Balch discuss a schedule change. -4- i .at Mrs. Morris is always on her toesl Mrs. Wright, a busy secretary, delights in helping everyone. 13

hange In English Department 9'-gf kg Miss Squires uses wild gestures in teaching. Time seems to be of great relevance to most people and relevance has changed along with time. Let us take Northmont High SchooI's English Department for an example of how relevance has changed with time. Five or ten years ago English was merely HAMLET and sen- tence structure. Oh, there was a little more but nothing that would keep one's adrenalin flow continuing. Now here we are in 1973 with all sorts of students with minds, ideas and preferences. That seems to be the very reason behind the English, pass-fail mini-classes. Each class has become a nine-week experience where l'm sure more has been about not only literature but life. While some stu- dents may take advantage of the situa- tion and do bare, minimal work to pass, most probably have more self pride and work as if they were getting a grade. ln a critique of the new English class sys- tems, Doug Greenfield felt that classes are too large. Due to the excessive sizes of the classrooms lattendancel there is much more confusion and the more confusion the less the class produces . . Such classes as Humanities, Readi- ness is All, Minorities Through Litera- ture and others have as many as 42 stu- dents everyday. Doug also felt that the time element is a nuisance and presents a suggestion for extending the classes: To change English classes into two- period sessions. BELOW: Mrs. Pansing likes being on the same level as the students. iiinst:..L ,L A V f ...N-N, Mrs. Gottschalk sinks into a poet-led discussion. -5 l ......-,bl 455 1
