Offense leaders were All City members Dean Conley, Bob Giroux, and Neil Ferree, who were also named to the All- District Squad and received Honorable Mention for All-State. Garth Nutter headed the defense with eight interceptions and was named to All-City and All-District squads, with an Honorable Mention for All-State. jeff Collins and Bob Renner were named to the All-City squad for their defensive abilities. jeff Hutchinson was named Most Valuable Player. Although the Vikings were one of the smallest city teams, hard hitting and execution brought them a most successful season. Northland led after the first and second rounds, but was overtaken in the finals. Senior Mike Huston and junior Steve Wenger took first place in the 132 lbs. and 175 lbs. weight classes respectively. Sophomore Ron Lincicome, 98-pounder placed second, as did Bob Dodson and Tony Molino. Under the leadership of Ty Yun the council discussed Homecoming Events, Sadie Haw- kins Dance, and Senior All Night Party. Representatives were elected last year and there is a proportionate amount of sophomores, juniors, and sen- iors to make sure that each class gets equal representa- tion. There was also a basketball game between our Varsity NU and Brookhaven's Varsity B. In an exciting contest, Northland pulled through and won by 'one Point? One of the many activities sponsored by the Athletic Boosters, was the completion of Ric Miller, Peter DeBellis, Vic Vanoy, and friend, sit down to the stadium, which was finished in the 'summer of '72!' discuss their favorite subject. 134 Chess Team Participates in State Toumamen ts. The Northland High School Chess Club has been involved in several types of tournament competition this year. In December, four of the top players went to Cleveland to compete in the Great Lakes High School Chess Tournament. Northland placed third, out of over twenty teams that competed. The Chess Club had two teams entered in the Central Ohio School Chess Association CC.O.S.C.A.j Each team that was entered, had to play and win nine games to A ' I receive a trophy. Valkyries is a group of 40 girls which march during halftime at football and basketball games. This year they also competed in two state-wide competitions. Named after the maidens who escorted the Viking warriors to Valhalla, the Viking heaven, the group was organized in 1968. Mrs. Carolyn White and Miss Marsha Mitchell were this year's advisors. The Chorale Was, by far, the most active group this year. The group performed for many outside organizations, includ- ing the Ohio Teachers' AFL-CIO, as Well performing for many school functions. One of the highlights this year Was singing Cherish,' in the 1973 Viking Variety Show. Young Adults put the finishing touch on their number in the Variety Show. Evans left Northland for a North Central Association of School Evaluators study of U.S. military base schools for children of American servicemen in japan. Accompanying Mr. Evans were two Department of Defense Officials and the assistant superintendent of schools of Wichita, Kansas. The men visited eight schools on Army, Navy, and Air Force bases, making suggestions for improving curriculum, scheduling, and student involvement and activities. Mr. Evans was welcomed back to Port Columbus on Friday November 17, by band members, students, faculty members, secretaries, and friends. B ' 'M Guidance Department Northland reorganized the Guidance Department this year to include a new counselor, Mr. Ronald Rabold, and to introduce a new method of counseling. Mr. Rabold was transferred from the art department to the guidance department to meet state standards of one counselor for every 400 students attending the school. Veteran counselors, Mr, Terry Schreiber, Mrs. Cherrye Lucas and Mrs. Helen Lias Cchairwomanj were still kept busy, even with the additional help. The new system of counseling this year was a cooperative effort between all the counselors. Some of them included volleyball, basketball, tennis, gymnastics, soccer, and baseball. This year the girls physical education course offered self-defense, which taught girls how to protect themselves if necessary. The Man and His Environment course has taken the place of the traditional Principles of Democracy. World History was also revised this year, being divided into world cultures, instead of the traditional chronological history. Mr. Stafford was department chairman.
