To each student: It has been a fascinating year. This was the year in which there appeared in Student Life the epistles according to St. Julien. It was the year of Selma, Alabama. This was the year sky-divers helped us dedicate our new football field and the Lake- land Muskies were reduced to harmless minnows. It was the year the United Nations adjourned gloomily after an ominous confronta- tion between France and the Soviet Union on one side, and the United States on the other. This was the year of the boardwalk and snow fence on campus as coeds found their way to a new home at McMillan Hall. It was the year Churchill died. This was the year the Lumberjacks played their first basketball game in our new physical education building. It was the year of the cheating scandal at the Air Force Academy. This was the year Northland students volunteered to help out the Odanah Indian kids in the new work-study program. It was the year Berkeley students struck for free speech and obscenity. This was the year of a declaration of peace between students and administration at Northland. It was the year the United States bombed North Vietnam. It was a frustrating and foolish year, a crowded and challenging year, a hopeful and happy year, a sad and unsatisfying yearea year like many others on a college campus, I suppose, difTering only in the degree that you were involved. I hope that the memories invoked by the Wedge of this year at Northland linger pleasantly in your mind. Hopefully next year will be better. Possibly next year will be worse. Probably next year will be similar. And how many years are left? From one to three on campus and then maybe 50 more. Thatis all iiWe live in deeds, not years; in thoughts, not breaths; In feelings, not in hgures on a dial. We should count time by heart-throbs.
