Historically, there is a close association between the development of the college and the timber resources in Northern Wisconsin. A wedge was a tool used by early pioneers in this area, and today, the word connotates continued pioneering in education. Senior James Coleman has created for us this motif by which we, the staff, wish to convey the dignity of our natural environment and the worth of the goals accepted by each student through his affiliation with Northland College. It is our hope that in future years, each of you Will return to these pages and deeply enjoy LE RECHERCHE DU TEMPS PERDU--REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST. I. II. III. IV. V. VI. Wheeler Hall I. Under her tutelage, countless students have gained an understanding of the French language and culture; by her kindness and humility, she established a creative atmosphere for learning and appreciation. Her death this year saddened all who knew her, but her contributions will never be forgotten. THE WEDGE STAFF FACULTY ADMINISTRATION TRUSTEES Ellsworth C. Alvord ....... Chairman Walter L. With our new Student Center Building and the coming new Physical Education Building and Dormitory, we are climbing another peak. Along with you, my sincere hope is that this peak will prove to be a plateau at which higher level Northland will operate for many years to come. It is only with the full cooperation of students and faculty that this hope for a new plateau of accomplishment can become a reality. SPORTS FOOTBALL FOOTBALL The 1962 edition of the football Lumberjacks posted a two win and six loss record. A tough schedule plus injuries to key personnel accounted for the unimpressive record. After an impressive win 22-6 against Jamestown, North Dakota, in the opener and a hair -raising loss to St. Cloud, Minnesota, 16-6, injuries to Little A11 American Don Krall and star end Jerry Carlson in the St . Norbert game indicated the problems that were to come. Highlight of the season was the performance of reserve quarterback Tim Hirsch, who helped lead the team to a Homecoming Victory against General Beadle of South Dakota. The loss of seven senior starters from this year's squad leaves the 1963 season in doubt. Elected as Tri-Captains were Ken Weiler, Bob Schaufer, and Jack Carlson for the 1963 season. Ken Weiler and Don Krall were listed high in national statistics for a good share of the season until injuries curtailed their activities . Bob Schaefer of Wauwautosa, Wisconsin was elected to the first team A11-State College Eleven. Don Krall led the Lumberjacks in total offense with 447 yards and in passing with a per game average of 73 yards . Ken Weiler led the Lumberjacks in pass receiving with an average of 60 gains per year . Ken Weiler of Colby, Wisconsin, also was the leading scorer for the Lumberjacks with 30 points followed by Seniors Dick Bonewitz and Jerry Carlson with 12 points apiece. The Lumberj acks started out very strong in their opening game against Stout with two freshman guards and a fresh- man forward performing as seasoned veterans. In the process of defeating Stout, one of the freshman guards was lost for the season with torn ligaments in his knee. This boy, Phil Martin: was considered one of the finest ball handlers to appear in a Northland uniform in recent years. He is expected to return to the lineup next season. The second game resulted in another Victory for the Lumberjacks as they edged out a strong Sioux Falls, South Dakota team in a close game. In the third game against St. Norberts, the Lumberjacks again were doing a fine job when the second freshman guard, Tim Zimmerman from Two Harbors, Minnesota, an excellent scorer and floorman, also tore the ligaments in his knee and was lost for the balance of the season. Zimmerman underwent surgery during the spring vacation and it is hoped that he also will return next season. Five minutes after the injury to Zimmerman, the veteran Don Krall dislocated his shoulder and was also lost for several games. Following these injuries much reorganization took place on the squad with forwards playing guards and new personnel in several key spots. The Lumberjacks at one time lost three consecutive games by three points or less, one of these to a very strong Yankton, South Dakota club in overtime. This same Yankton won its way to the NAIA Tournament in Kansas City this year. The Co-Champions of the Northern States College Conference, Michigan Tech downed the Lumberj acks in two closely fought ball games. Both games were decided in the last two minutes of action. The Lumberj acks for the season had wins over Stout, Sious Fall, Lawrence, two over Pillsbury, two over North- western of Minneapolis, and two over Bethel College. The last victory over Bethel College was a very dramatic 83-78 win in the final game of the season. Jack Povaser, high scoring forward for the Lumberjacks, broke the allu time Northland scoring record as the gun went off ending the season. The record for the season was 9 wins and 11 losses and for the season the opponents outscored the Lumberjacks by only a total of 24 points. The Lumberjacks offense was the second highest in the college's history as they averaged 77.6 points per game. Several individual records were set. Jack Povaser with his last second shot in the Bethel game closed his collegiate career with 1,173 points, surpassing the 1,171.points scored by Bill Arntsen two years ago. Jacks scored a total of 498 points this year and was ranked 12th nationally among small college scoring leaders. Freshman Bob Hammen from Shorewood, Wisconsin, broke the all-time freshman record as he ended the season with 373 points. This broke the record previously held by Waldon Johnson of Rapid City, Michigan. Hammen was the only member of this year's squad to score in the double figures in every ball game. Garry White of Cloquet, Minnesota; Don Krall of Antigo, Wisconsin; Jack Povaser of Ashland, Wisconsin; finished their collegiate playing careers this season. Jim Bussey of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, is a senior but has some eligibility remaining and may return next year. Dennis Tiziani, a sophomore from Ironwood, Michigan who is considered one of the best young golfers in the Northern States area was the trouble shooter on this year's squad and ended up as the fifth highest scorer as he entered many games at crucial moments and seemed to provide the spark that carried the Lumberjacks to victory. There seems to be a good nucleus of young ball players returning; such as sophomore Phil Martin, freshman Tim Zimmerman, Junior Tom Haut, sophomore Dennis Tiziani, sophomore Bob Schaefer, sophomore Tom Holmwood, freshman Paul Gaffke, Junior Bill Kubeny, sophomore Ray Gougeon, sophomore Bob Lee, sophomore Mark Smith, sophomore Everett Hill, and freshman Larry Stevens to make the Lumberj acks a cage power in the next few years. Jack Povaser aside from his new four year total, set the following records at Northland; 562 points in one season, 28.2 average for one season, 220 field goals scored in one season, 122 free throws scored in one season, a 26.7 average per game during his collegiate career, and a one game scoring record of 43 points. Jack was awarded a first team position on the Wisconsin All-State Sports Editor' All-State in 1962. Coach Ed Kernan's Lumberjacks have won 65 and lost 40 games in the past 5 years for a winning percentage of .619. 70 Don Krall Gary White Jim Bussey SENIOR PLAYERS Jack Povaser TENNIS Although no conference meet was held this year, the Northland tennis squad was one of the strongest in history. B111 Stonecipher remained undefeated this year in dual meets, but lost an early round match in the Bemidji Invitational. Jack Kruse lost his first dual match in two years, but went on to the semi-finals in the Bemidji Invitational. Northland finished 6th in the 10 team tournament at Bemidji. In other meets, they tied Bethel, defeated Gogebic and lost to Michigan Tech. Jack Kruse will graduate this year . BASEBALL Inclement weather, a cut down of the sports activity at Superior curtailed the base- ball schedule at Northland, Arrangements have been made to increase the schedule a great deal next year . The Lumberjacks lost their two games this spring to Bemidji State College and to the Duluth Air Force Base . All other games were canceled. A strong team was fielded by the Lumberjacks and with the opportunity to play would have been a strong contender in every game . Most of the players return next year and will provide Northland with a strong representative on the diamond. 71 SPRING SPORTS TRACK With the promise of a new track on campus, a small squad of ten track men posted an impressive 61 points to gain second place in the annual Badger -Gopher Invitational T rack Meet . Junior T ransfer student, Jim Arnold, of Yakima, Washington piled up 37 points for the team high. Sixteen of his points were earned in the Badger -Gopher Meet . With seven of the eight lettermen from this year's squad returning, Northland's track fortune seems to be taking a turn for the better . Arnold was elected as captairi for the 1964 season. GOLF The Northland golf team captured the Badger-Gopher Invita- tional Meet in St. Paul as Dennis Tiziani was the medalist in the meet. Gary White, Tom Haut, and Mark Greene com- pleted the squad that won the championship. The team com- peted in dual meets against Michigan Tech both at home and away, and the Bemidji Invitational in addition to the Con- ference meet. Only Gary White is lost by graduation.
